Question:
Should I feed my new puppy different food than my older dog?

My bulldog (Lily) is almost 6 years old and we're about to add a new puppy to the family. Lily has always been really good about not eating other dogs food (when we have overnight guests) because she knows it's not hers. Feeding them the same brand will definitely make my shopping easier, but I'm wondering if it might create jealousy between the Lily and the new puppy. Any theories/experience with this would be appreciate!

Puppy should be on puppy food.

Edit: I feed my 2 dogs the same food, when I got my second dog, I was in the same situation with an adult and a puppy.

We had to keeo the pup away from my other dog as he was a very very greedy pup and stole my older dogs food.

I kept them seperated untill he was trained not to eat everything he sees.

They've always been on the same food, and we have no problems with them now.

There are a couple of high quality dogs food that are for all life stages like taste of the wild or evo. Since those foods are so high quality it is ok to feed your puppy and older dog the same food, but only with a brand like that. Puppies need more calories and nutrients than an older dog, so the only way to feed them both foods is to get a all life stages dog food that is very high quality. Good luck!

Yes. a new puppy requires different nutrients and other dietary components than an older dog. Most brands have a puppy food and a mature dog or senior food in their line. Feeding a puppy an adult dog's food or vice-versa won't kill them, but probably isn't the best thing either

Dogs can digest cereals, but some dogs, in increasing numbers these days it seems, can develop allergies to things like Wheat. Secondly, it is best to feed a puppy the food his been having back with his breeder, for the first weeks or so with a new owner. Otherwise an abrupt switch can cause tummy upsets. And good breeders tend to know what works best, with their particular puppies, so it's worth listening to them, over vets!!! I had one vet completely rubbish my tried and tested diet (for generations). That made me really mad! Puppies do need, in my opinion, more than adults do to help promote healthy growth so for me, I prefer to feed a puppy specific food, at least until around 8 months, depending on the breed. Otheres may disagree! Some companies recommend switching to an adult feed by 6 months. You are right, what to feed dogs is a minefield, and everybody has their own ideas, as I expect you'll see here. My advice is find something your dog /puppy does well on, and stick to it, starting with what he was having with his breeder. ps I look for ingredients first (not price) and this ideally should start with meat, not cereal.

A puppy needs puppy food until they are full grown. That can be between 1-2 years depending on the size of the dog. I wold guess you are not feeding your 6 year old puppy food. So they eat different until the new pup is full grown. The brand can be the same though

Puppys should not eat dog food! They need puppy food, dog food is too hard and rich for them. If you ment keep to the same brand but buy puppy and dog food then they're not going to know are they =] I've just got a puppy and my older dog (who is 11) has adjusted to her fine, we feed them in different rooms though cause my puppy shitzu steals my greatdane's food haha! x

Puppies should be fed puppy food for at least the first year, so yes... you should get different food. Most major food brands have a puppy version, using that will make it easier to switch the puppy to adult food when it is time, then you will be able to feed them the same thing.

Well I think you need to feed the new puppy, puppy food. Lily shouldn't have the puppy food as it will have too much fat and whatnot for an older dog like her. I assume she would gain weight that isn't needed.

I don't know what breed you are going to get, larger breeds usually need puppy foods with lower protein and fat (like a great dane).

Good Luck!

I will be fine will both dogs just feed the puppy less obviously. Maybe you should feed them in different rooms to begin with so each dog knows how much food it should get and won't take the others

You can feed the same brand but don't feed the new puppy adult dog food. The puppy needs food specific for puppies because it's got nutrients necessary for a strong, healthy, growing puppy.

really, dont feed the new puppy the same food. ur puppy needs to have puppy food instead of adult food. plus it also depends on the breed. if the puppy is like.... a german sheperd or some large dog like that, it will need to be fed a large breed dog food when it is grown. just feed ur new puppy a puppy kind of food, and also mix wet wih it too. and also follow it depending on the size of the dog. hope it helps! sorry if ur confused. lol

You need to buy food designed for puppies. Not just because it says "puppy food". The reason is it is designed to help digest better and also contains vital nutrients that young dogs need to grow healthy. Just like our stages in life, dogs have different nutritional needs in each stage of life. Puppy, adult, senior.

Even though it may seem a hassle to buy puppy food, I would recommend that you do for the sake of your new family member's health.

Puppies require more calories and nutrients than adult dogs. You should feed the puppy puppy food and your adult dog is about ready for senior food. Many brands carry both types but don't feed the dogs the same food.

The new puppy should get puppy food, not adult food.

Buy Innova. It is a little more expensive but doesn't have all that by-product crap in cheap dog food. Your puppy will have less poops and they will be harder (not messy).

A professional dog trainer told me about Innova, and it is one of the best dog foods you can buy. Your puppy will enjoy a much healthier and longer life.

I have no affiliation with Innova, I just use it and am very pleased with it.

If its a small puppy, the puppy needs puppy food, the difference is that adult dog food enforces their health, while puppy helps them grow healthy and strong. So puppy food is kinda of a better choice, lol, goooood luck!!

I would feed your puppy iams dry puppy food . dry is good for their teeth also. I'd also feed your older dog iams dry food , you'll have to read the bag to find witch is the best for him. there's a 1800 # on the bag you can call and they 'll send you coupons.

Yes. I have a 1 yr old chihuahua (chiwawa) and a 4 yr old pug/dachund mixed... but anyways.... My chihuahua won't eat my other dog's food. and my other dog won't eat my chihuahua's food. So, yes, I would say buy Lily one of the bags of food (at walmart) that has the golden retriever on it, and your new puppy the bag that has a small dog on it. Or if you want something cheap..(both of my dogs eat it) There is the canned food. And there are different flavors... try whatever. Hope this helped you.

The main reason not to do this is that it is not good to feed younger dogs adult dog food because the younger dog food is fattier than the older dog food. It would be not good for Lily's health for the main reason.

If you are feeding an ALS formula there is no need to. However I don't think having an adult Bulldog on an All Life Stages formula is a very good idea.

Ours all eat in their crates, there is never a problem that way.

edit

"This food is consequently appropriate for all stages of life (including puppyhood) because it is so nutritious. "

The problem is that it is probably TO NUTRITIOUS for your adult bulldog.
