Question:
Can fish oil make my dog lose weight?

I know that fish oil helps humans lose weight, and I know how it does.

But I was wondering if the same thing applied to animals?

Or if anyone could suggest something to make my fat dog lose weight.
I know obviously exercise, no "people" food, correct amount of dog food, calorie control dog food, and less treats.
Is there anything else I could do?

Thanks in advance. :D

No, it won't help your dog lose weight. In fact, adding the extra fat to her diet could encourage her to gain more weight.

You have the basic idea in reducing treats and feeding the proper amount of food. The really critical ingredients for success in that plan will be to accurately measure her food with a measuring cup and to weigh her every 2-4 weeks to make sure she is losing the weight she should. Your vet should be happy to let her use his scale in his office if that would be easier.

Remember, the "proper amount" of food is determined by how much weight your dog gains or loses, not what is printed on the bag. The bag is only a guideline. And when you start your fat dog on a diet, it's good to start by reducing her food by 25% from what she was getting before. You don't really even need a reduced calorie food if you are watching her calories. You DO want to make sure she's getting plenty of protein.

If you cut her food back and she's not losing weight, consider having the vet test for thyroid disease. And I know you said you weren't looking for a dog weight loss pill . . . but in fact there IS one available called Slentrol that your vet may carry. It's up to you and your vet whether you want to try it for your dog.

I have no idea if it will effect your dog the same as a person, but if given too much it will make your dog have a GI upset.

If you are looking to help your dog lose weight I suggest slowly introducing a weight control dog food along with everything you mentioned.

I would also recommend having your dog tested. If your dog is having an unusually hard time losing weight it could be a thyroid problem or something similar.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

There's an oil the feed stores sell. Omega 3. It has fish oil and good stuff. Wheat germ oil is good too if your dogs not allergic to Gluten. If your dog is young or has a hidden condition like Thyroid it can affect the coat quality too. Has your dog been wormed lately? Dogs with a lot of worms tend to have poor coat quality.

If you obviously know that exercise, no "people" food, and correct rations are a way to make your dog lose weight healthily, why are you trying to find something that you can just give your dog to make it magically lose weight. There aren't any diet pills for humans that work, and there aren't any for dogs (that aren't' prescription, anyway). I would suggest that you do all of the things that you listed and see how it works out for you. If your dog is very obese, there are prescription diets that he can go on (like r/d and w/d from Science Diet) that could help him lose weight healthily.

That sounds like the recipe for your dog to have the runs! Dogs get digestive disturbances easily.

Switch it to lite food. That's a good start! And only feed the dog at certain times of day, with an amount of food you measure out with a scoop. Such as half a cup, one cup, etc. Don't leave food in the bowl all day, or the dog will snack all day.

If you cut back on food, make sure the dog has things to do like toys to play with...otherwise you might come home and find things chewed up!

No cutting corners with pets, exercise and measure out the food better...cut back on the treats. Fish oil can be beneficial to pets, but not necessarily for weight loss...consult your vet before dosing your dog.

I'm not sure about the fish oil but if you feed your dog less food but add canned pumpkin the plain kind not the pie filling it will help make them feel fuller and it somehow boosts their metabolism

Fish oil does not make humans lose weight, it doesn't make dogs lose weight.

You could stop feeding the inappropriate glop you're currently feeding and feed the dog her actual natural diet: raw meat on the bone.

Here's how:

You decide how much you think she should weigh -- the anticipated correct adult weight, and you feed the dog 2% of that amount of meat every day.

Less food and more exercise is the safest way. I don't rely on supplements for my own weight loss - I sure wouldn't rely on supplements for my dogs.
