Some are fairly decent & some are just plain horrible. You won't know what yours is like until you get there. Your heart will go out to all of them but you can only take one home if you qualify for one. You will have to fill out a form to see if you qualify as a new parent & you may be rejected if they feel a puppy/dog would not be safe with you & your family.

Depending on the size of the shelter, you may see lots of dogs. Small breeds tend to find homes faster, so there may not be as many small breeds. I've been "dog shopping" at shelters with my mom and a friend. I personally haven't adopted a shelter dog, but I have adopted two shelter cats.

I took my mom to two big shelters in a large city. There were many dogs, but she didn't find the "right" one. An Aussie mix she liked seemed to be itchy and an adorable Terrier mix was a barker. We went to our small local shelter and she found her perfect dog. Still has him, and couldn't be happier.

My friend found two small dogs that she really liked at the SPCA. We went in the private room and held them and got to know them. While they were "cat testing" them, we wandered around and found another room of dogs we hadn't seen before. She found a dog she liked even more in that room and ended up adopting her.

They will let you interact with the dog in either a room or a yard. You may or may not find the "right" one on your first trip.

well when you go there will be a bunch of dogs in their cages, you can look at all of them and if you look into their eyes sometimes you can tell if they are right for you. you can usually meet them in a room to see what their like. Make sure to ask about their background because some may be terrified of certain things. Like: gates, Doors, fast movements...
