My dog is very attached to me, He follows me everywhere. I can't leave the room without him following me. When I leave the house he becomes stressed and barks constantly until I come home. I live in an apt. I use a bark collar but really don't like them. Any suggestions?

When a dog barks and nobody is around to hear it, does it really make any noise?

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog.

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

First, stop using the bark collar. He is barking because he is anxious. Getting corrected for it only will increase his anxiety.

Pacifia's idea about playing a form of peek-a-boo is good, but I would not advise praising and giving treats when you come back into the room. This will probably only get him excited, which is exactly what you don't want. If he is calm when you return to the room, you can give a small smile and softly say good boy, but ignore him and go about your business if he is wound up. If he won't stay in the room, use a baby gate or tether to prevent him from following you.

Comfort Zone is great for relieving stress - most pet stores sell it. Canine Lullabies (the cd someone above recommended) is quite helpful, as well. You can also give him Rescue Remedy, an herbal mixture.

Well, there are many things that you can do. First of all, I suggest giving the dog a piece of clothing or perhaps an old blanket that has your smell on it. Use it as part of its bedding or special spot.

Another thing that you can do is train him or her. Basically like a game of pee a boo. Go into a room and make him stay and disappear around the corner or go into the next room. Wait about a minute before showing yourself. Make sure to teach him to stay. When you reappear praises him verbally as well perhaps give him a treat. I wouldn't rely on the treat thing so much due to they can learn to expect the treat every time, but use it to help encourage the better behavior. Keep doing this game over the next couple of weeks and increase the time each time that it is played. He will learn that even though you are gone you will come back. Make sure to give lots of praise as this will really help increase the new good behavior that you are wanting.

Another thing that you can try is going to the pet store and purchasing one of the Kong toys and put a little bit of peanut butter down in it. It will help keep your little buddy busy for hours until you return.

I hope that these suggests help. Remember to give lots and lots of praise when trying to teach him these new things.

What worked for us is as follows:

Put your jacket on, find your keys, put your shoes on and leave. Wait a minute or so and go back in. Take it all off and wait ten mins, now repeat the process again, but dont tell the dog to stop barking. The repition of this helps your dog realise that you are coming back, maybe not straight away but you will come back. Also by acknowledging him by saying "no" or "quiet" etc is just paying him attention for barking which is what he wants. It will take a while but it will work.

I observed this on a form of annoying puppy shows those days. it would be simply by fact he's worried approximately you leaving. the way they fastened this on the practice substitute into with the aid of pretending to bypass away, doing the entire habitual of putting the coat on and all of that. You walk out the door so the canines thinks you're going, yet then you definately come again back in the door back. do not pay the canines from now on interest or make a fuss once you come again interior. merely come again in and positioned your coat back the place it belongs. Then repeat the approach. do this some circumstances over the subsequent ten minutes. merely shop repeating the action of pretending to bypass away and then come again in without making a fuss over the canines. ultimately the canines will merely not take plenty word and it takes the rigidity away while he notices you beginning as much as place your coat on. yet whats up, it substitute right into a television practice, yet I want I had tried this trick back as quickly as I had a canines some years in the past, he used to bypass nuts every time we left him.

I had the same problem with my dog. One thing that helped him was a relaxation CD to help with seperation anxiety. They sell them on Amazon and sometimes at Walmart. They also make a plug in availalble at Petsmart that releases a relaxing phermone. On a weekend try leaving for short intervals and coming back in. Leave for 5-10 minutes at a time then come back when the dog is quiet. Hope this helps.
