Question:
Vet and Pet food question?
2009-10-07 04:36:12 UTC
My sister has a 4 month old Beagle puppy and I have a 5 month old Beagle puppy myself.
Her puppy wasn't eating very well and she ended up taking him to the vet, who recommended switching brands of food. His suggestion was to get Science Diet and proceeded to tell her that Science Diet, Iams, and Purina were some of the top dog food brands and that Wellness was lower than them.
I feed my puppy Wellness Just for Puppy food.. and I'm pretty sure Wellness is better quality than the 3 recommended by her vet.
Why would he recommend them if it's not true?

Veterinarians are not trained much in canine nutrition. What they are taught is information provided and sponsored by those dog food companies. They also get some kick-backs when they sell a particular brand in their clinic.

If your sister wants to get it from a vet who has studied canine nutrition she should see a holistic vet.

Wellness is better than those foods. Reading the labels would make that very clear.

Um, Wellness is one of the top brands, while Science Diet, Iams and Purina are a few of the very worst. Veterinarians are paid to push poor quality brands onto their clients, and most veterinarians are not educated in that field of pet care - that is why.

Wellness is a superb brand that offers several different formulas to fit your dog's needs, such as CORE which is grain-free and a Simple Solutions line for dogs that have food allergies and stomach problems, and the Super5Mix formulas are fantastic.

He probably feels it is true, but vets don't get much training in nutrition in vet school--and the courses are taught by reps from Hills. Some of the prescription formulas made by those pet food companies do seem to help for certain conditions, but on the whole Wellness is better than those other foods.

The "big box" pet foods are the worst thing you can feed your dog. It's already been stated but do some research on DogFoodAnalysis and you'll see how bad they really are.

If you really want to provide the best diet for your pet you should strongly consider a prey model RAW diet (meat, bones & organs).

Here's a great read on getting started

The greater representation they get carry of, the greater the frenzy or " advise" that nutrition. One vet replaced into handing out Purina crap chow calenders, and samples. They the two made the trash can asap. yet another replaced into continuously advise KD or technological information D. greater junk. those vets knew i replaced into feeding, sparkling parched chicken.....Any vet that thinks a bagged nutrition, is greater healthy than sparkling chicken, pork, liver, cottage cheese,apple,banana,broccoli,carrot,yam.... a screw unfastened. yet greater probably $$$$$$ makes their regulations. they'll furnish their bagged nutrition. you will see its call, on charts and so on. Its honest warning for you, to learn foodstuff....After that, there's a reliable probability, which you are going to not be seeing a vet for alonnnnng time. stay far off from the poisons that vets furnish. For fleas and so on. Make your guy or woman, clearly. "do not enable your puppy consume or touch poisons you does not". Carpet powder, backyard fertilizer, gutter water, flea sprays, powders, chlorine acid water from swimming pools, and so on. Feed sensibly, your puppy will love u, your vet in no way did.

If she does not trust him, then maybe she should check the relative nutritional values herself. They should be clearly stated on the box.
