Got some simple questions about Great Danes.?

My husband and I have talked a lot over the past 2years of what kind of big dog we want to get when we move out from this apartment. We're hoping to rent a home, or a trailer park where they will allow big dogs... since we won't be able to afford a house for a while more yet.
I keep seeing Great Danes, and I really love them. Every single one I've been with I loved. When I was a kid, a friend had one and I found it funny how much he followed me around and loved up on me AND sat on me! Boxers (or at least my mom's) did the same thing, Rascals was a big baby.

Now, I know Great Danes drool, and that is why I am hesitant. Rascals drooled, but not so much where I would get totally grossed out. It was mostly after he drank.
Do Great Danes drool constantly (like a basset hound, which I love but cannot own due to that) or more like a Boxer?
Also, how much food in a day do they eat? My sister gave up her St. Bernard because of the cost of food (I told the dummy that it would be expensive). I know they will eat a lot, but I sorta would like an idea on how much they would eat.

Other dogs we're thinking of are
German Shepard
Boxer

and that blue coated herding dog... I know what it is but all I can think of is the Blue Tick and can't remember if thats the hunter or the heeler *chuckles* Darn early mornings & no coffee.

We have a Great Dane.

She only "drools" a bit after she drinks her water. I would not even call it "drooling" so much as just...messy. But she licks up the water she spills! :)

She does eat A LOT. She eats 5-6 cups a day (we feed her twice a day).

I don't mean to imply that you don't already know, but if you do choose a Dane, make sure you do your research and fully educate yourself on the risks. Danes are extremely susceptible to bloat and distention (stomach twisting) which can be sudden and fatal.

I can't comment on the other breeds you are considering...I don't know anything about them! But Holly (our Dane) is a great girl and wants nothing more than to hang out with you and have her head scratched. They can be rowdy puppies, but she's about a year and a half and she has calmed down considerably. This is only good because she tended to run into walls, furniture, the...water heater...and she could have won in a fight with any of them, I think. :)

Whatever you choose, good luck and have fun!

On the drool issue. Some dogs will drool more than others. Some drool when they are excited, when they drink, or when they are hungry. You can't always tell but most of the danes that drool have a lot of lip. Dogs like danes, bassets, mastiffs, and there are others have a loose lips that flops down over their teeth and this enhances their abilities to drool. However I have had danes most my life and most of them did not drool excessively. I had one that did not drool at all and the one I have now only drools after drinking. I have never thought much about it and it has never been an issue. They do eat a lot when growing up (if you buy a puppy they gain 100 lbs in first 6 months of life - they have to be eating a lot of calories for that to happen) but after they are full grown they are very easy keepers and do not consume much more than a large german sheperd. There are pluses and minuses to every dog breed out there the big negative I see for danes is the health issue and the fact that the majority of these big dogs do not live past 8 years old. Do your research, weigh your options, talk to responsible breeders and dane clubs in your area and you will ultimately find the dog that will match your desires. And remember a little drool never hurt anybody.

Most trailer parks will not allow large or giant breed dogs. Also most landlords won't allow them either. Breeders & Rescues will want a letter from landlords if you are renting. Plus you will need a back up plan if you have to move.

You will need a fence yard and a place to walk them daily.

Danes usually only drool after drinking water. Many drool when they see their dinner or treats.

My girls eat between 6-8 cups daily.

The Queensland Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog may be better suited for right now.

I have had five Great Danes. Right now we have three left.

Only one of them has every really drools a lot, and it's only when she is drinking water. The rest of the time, they only drool when they are exercising/running around or REALLY excited, and it's usually no more than what can be cleaned up with a single paper towel.

Some dogs will drool more than others, but none of my Great Danes has ever produced massive amounts of drool like a bloodhound or mastiff.

They do eat a lot. The number of cups they eat will depend on their age and the brand of food. Poor quality foods like Science Diet and Iams will require many more cups (maybe more than 10 per day) than higher quality brands like Taste of the Wild or Wellness (about 5 or 6 per day). My Great Danes eat a prey-model diet, all raw foods, and they get 2% of their body weight in food per day, about 3 pounds each.

Everything for Great Danes will cost about twice as much as it does for littler dogs, just because everything has to be twice the size. You will end up buying the biggest crate, the biggest collar, the biggest doses of medications, the biggest bed, more food, etc. But in return you get much more love than from a little dog. :)

You can also go to Meetup.com and see if there are any Great Dane groups in your area. We have one and we get together with them all the time so that our dogs can play with lots of other Great Danes. It's a great way to keep in touch with other people in your area who also love Great Danes.

i'm a great Dane proprietor, have mentors interior the breed, and understand many breeders properly. great Danes don't have an aggressive bone of their physique. they are the sweetest element you will ever meet. you won't be able to yell around a Dane or they get disenchanted. you think of it incredibly is a shaggy dog tale till you watch... I raised my voice one time to a relative and my woman tried setting up herself below a chair yet purely have been given her head in. They do properly with smaller canines, despite the fact that it is not a stable concept to have them unsupervised with "tiny" canines. great Danes usually do no longer understand their length and can actual accidentally injure the smaller canines. My previous Dane woman's suited chum replaced right into a Jack Russel Terrier. wonderful with infants!! wonderful. it incredibly is all I might desire to declare. they are especially friendly with strangers. some are a hundred% welcoming, others are a tad aloof. they are not a secure practices/take care of canines in any respect so subsequently whilst socialized appropriate strangers are no subject. the only element i'm able to recommend to you is inspect the great Dane club of u.s. and detect a breeder on your state. Ask them any questions you have related to Danes and spot in case you may meet a number of theirs. the only way you may understand a Dane is by using assembly some. you don't get the "lean", the way they sit down, how gentle they are, they are organic innocence, etc with the aid of somebody telling you over the internet. you won't be able to incredibly understand their length, the two. great Danes are no longer for all and sundry... bear in strategies that! stable success
