Question:
Has anyone had a DHPPL vaccine problem? I have.?

Yesterday I took my standard poodle puppy in for her second set of shots. As we were leaving the vets office she started rubbing her face with her paws. Then she threw up, urinated and pooped and then collapsed. The vet assistant screamed "we have an emergency". They grabbed her from me, rushed her to the back. Gave her an epi-shot, benedryl, a shot for inflammation, a shot for nausea. They also gave her oxygen and IV fluids. She slowly started coming around. Later that evening they let her go home with me. Last night she was still SO sick. I was up most of the night forcing her to drink glucose water (which they gave me). This morning she seems better but has to be on a bland diet for 24 to 48 hours with LOTS of fluids. Has this happened to anyone? Did your dog have any lasting effects from this? Did you let the vet give them another vaccination? I am scared to let them give her anything else. I have even heard that the rabies can cause a reaction. The vet did say that the next time he would dose her with Benedryl before giving the shot, but I have heard that even giving benedryl before is not always fail-proof.

Is DHPPL a vaccination with the leptospiros factor included?

My Cavalier boy had a reaction to his C5 vaccination when he was 16 months old but not nearly as bad a reaction as your dog. Your girl evidently had a very severe allergic reaction to it. Anaphylactic shock maybe? Is she ok now? How long did it take her to recover?

My normally healthy dog who had never had a sick day in his life experienced explosive diarrhea with 6 hours of the vaccination. He was prescribed metronidazole and it settled within a couple of days. I have never vaccinated him again. He's 6yo now.

I'll probably titer this year because I'm reluctant to vaccinate again. I think once the memory cells have already battled a disease (even small dose live attentuated vaccine) they're there for life.

I now follow the Dr. Jean Dodds protocol and give 2 puppy shots and a booster at 16 months and that's it.

ADD: we don't have rabies in Australia so no vaccs needed for this.

Agree with MamaBas and I would go for titre's in the future.

It is a fact that a lot of the vaccinations they have are not needed and with some they would be covered for life after the first shot.

What an awful ordeal for you to go through.

I know of a rottie puppy that reacted to the first in a similar way and that owner was terrified of giving the second but the vet gave the counter-acting shots before hand and thank goodness she was ok.

Heart goes out to you for sure as that must have been extremely scary for you.

A friend who bred a litter where two of them were going to be using the same vets, and took them on the same day for their first shots, and lost the two of them through the reaction. This surely was down to the batch of vaccines rather than the individual dogs as it was too much of a co-incidence, although it was never proved obviously as everyone involved closes ranks.

I also do the 16 month shot and nothing else as Autumn does, however, we do not have to worry about rabies shots here in the UK

It is rare but not totally uncommon. Your dog had an anaphylactic shock, usually caused by the "carrier fluid" that the vaccine is in.

As you know the dog has had this reaction it would be very inadvisable for your dog to have another vaccination. If this was a rabies shot, you *can* get a letter of dispensation from your vet. I suggest you contact a homoeopathic vet for further advise.

Google canine vaccine contra-indications or vaccine damage.

No and I imagine it's very rare to get a reaction quite as dramatic as this! What a good job you were still there.......

I'd be extremely wary about repeating this - and would go for homeopathic nosodes in future. I don't know about rabies however so that's one for your vet. And I think I'd go for titre testing before giving any more jabs, to see what your puppy is at risk for. Did they say why the first set went in without this reaction? That would interest me.

I am in the UK and I agree with Mama Bas. I have always been reluctant to give my dogs chemical which are in vaccinations/shots and flea preventatives. Dogs have been known to die because of their annual vaccinations/shots. Vets and pharmicutical companies promote vaccinations/shots and flea treatments for profit. Do they care that a number of dogs suffer and sometimes die because of this?

Before I bought my puppies, the breeder gave them their first shots/vaccinations to prevent parvo etc.; I have read so much about the dangers of annual shots/vaccinations that I opted out many years ago. I have had sixteen dogs that have always mixed very freely with other dogs and they have never had injections/shots. Instead I use homeopathic nosodes every month. It’s like giving them one twelfth of the doze that they are given annually by the vet. Homeopathy is cheap and its kind and free from nasty chemicals.

At the outset there is a loading dose, if you decide to opt for homeopathy ask the supplier to give you full instructions on how to administer homeopathic remedies AND the instructions on the loading dose for the preparations that you order. I order mine from Ainsworths in London Telephone 0207 935 5330 or from Helios 01892 537254. If you are outside of the UK there will be a different prefix. I have checked and both of these companies deliver worldwide for an additional delivery cost. You will be able to order a remedy to prevent Parvo etc., plus another to prevent worms. These remedies cost about £24 (that’s about £12 for each remedy) plus additional postage if you are outside the U.K. they will last for years, less if you have several dogs to treat. Order SOFT tablets, they are tasteless and soft tablets are difficult to spit out. I think that you should phone Ainsworths in preference to the other company and ask to speak to a homeopath that specializes in dogs or email them its www.ainsworths.com

Check the details on their Website as the nozodes that I use may not cover heartworm as it is very rare in the UK.

PREVENTING FLEAS.

There are lots of treatments for killing and preventing fleas, they are full of nasty chemicals and they are expensive. I make up a solution for my dogs which prevents fleas, although it is also said to kill fleas I have no experience of this because my dogs have never had fleas.

At the outset it may be expensive to buy the ingredients, however they will last for years. Use a few drops of Citricidal and essential oils of Citronella, Tea Tree and Lavender. Add this to half a pint of vinegar and sponge a small amount onto your dog’s coat. I use this every week.

You may not be able to purchase Citricidal, however the other ingredients can be purchased at a health shop.

Oh boy, I am sorry that what happened to your dog. It could be your dog's allergic reaction? My dogs never had any problems with DHPPL its actually protects for dogs. I think you should go to different vet to ask question to see if your currently vet is telling the same thing don't let anything inject your dog yet till you are certianly sure. I hope your dog will be ok
