Chinese crested dogs?

I have one.

They do need special skin care.. they are prone to sunburn, acne, blackheads, dry skin, contact allergies, and other skin infections/irritations. Some have better skin than others.. some require nothing more than a weekly bath with a mild dog shampoo, and some need special medicated shampoos and lotions. Hairless is more work to take care of than a puff is.

They are notoriously difficult to housebreak.. I dont know many that are 100% housebroken. They are very needy and clingy dogs.. and very emotional. They will often let you know they are upset by leaving the message on your pillow, or someplace for you to step in!

The hairless is not always "hairless".. they do vary in amounts of body hair. Mine is a "true" hairless. He has no body hair, but he doesnt have the flashy socks and mane like you see on the Cresteds in the dog shows. A "moderate" hairless may have a strip of hair down its back, and on the legs.. and a "hairy" hairless may be almost completely covered in a fine, single layer of hair. Shaving isnt an absolute necessity tho unless you are showing, or you want that "hairless" look.. I prefer the true hairless, as I like the hairless, without the "stubbles".

Puffs have a complete double coat of hair... they require an occasional bath and daily brushing to prevent matts.

Hairless come with dental issues. Missing teeth are accepted in the show ring for the hairless variety. Better bloodlines tend to have better dentation, but its still being improoved. My hairless is only missing about 3 teeth, what teeth he does have tho are small and not as well-developed as compared to other dogs of his size. Puffs should have a "normal" set of teeth.

Hairless tend to have a more "child-like" personality, while puffs are more independant.

Some are known to be escape artists.. they are pretty crafty at digging, jumping and climbing. Mine is trustworthy off-leash, but not all cresteds are.

They are clingy to their owners and family, and enjoy the company of favored friends.. but they are not typically overly friendly towards strangers.. however they should not be aggressive.

They do get along well with other dogs and cats if socialized. Some may display prey drive towards small animals and birds tho.

They are smart little dogs, but they are also master manipulators.. they will try to push your buttons to get their own way. They can be trained to do tricks, but you have to use the right motivation and be consistent with them.. if they get away with something once, they will try it again!

For rescue, I reccommend Crest-Care..

if you go with a breeder, do your research. They are prone to so many health issues.. both types of PRA (causes blindness) and dry eye are the biggest issues in the breed.. other problems include luxating patella, legges perthe, allergies, closed ear canal, heart murmurs, and I've recently heard of some cropping up with thyroid issues and liver shunts.

ADDED

You deserve an extra star for being responsible and doing your research.

Too many people buy a dog based on appearances alone (look at the few people who told you to buy a different breed because they think cresteds are ugly!).

I personally like the look of the hairless. My dog is different, but he's not just another poodle or chihuahua like what everyone else has! He also has the personality I want.. I dont mind the extra work with grooming and skin care.. and I accept the housebreaking quirks, all breeds have their "good and bad"

Feel free to contact me if you want more info on the breed.

I've never personally owned one, but they are adorable little boogers, aren't they? Thank you for doing your research prior to adopting/buying, very responsible of you.

I wish adults would do the same! They could learn a thing or two from you!

You could email some breeders at http://www.akc.org and they would be happy to answer your questions. Everyone would love for their puppies to go to informed owners.

No problem with them except for housebreaking. Honest. I have some. And the breeder that gave them to me lives in Arizona now. I live in Ohio. She has over 40, yet, some she gives away free and about everyone my mom knows that's either gotten one from her or just has one of that breed, says they can't get them to go outside. I see nothing else wrong with them. I have one male chinese crested though and he learned quickly, so get a male. They're named Chinese Cresteds, yet I hear they come from Africa.

1. NEVER buy a PUPPY younger then 8WEEK old!

They need to remain with the litter until that age to develope proper behavioural and socialiation skills

2. NEVER BUY A PUPPY just LOOKS, colour, looks, fur type alone-NO INDICATION OF DOGS TEMPERMENT!

3. Consider your lifestyle

4. Are you out more then 8hours a day

5. Consider your energy requirements, Size, Grooming.

6. Don't just buy because someone says this is the dog for you, people particular on yahoo answer will give you there particular favourite breed& what suits them, not what actually suit you.

7. Read all you can-THERE are alot of false information on the web and in books about different dog breed.

8. DON'T TRUST THOSE DOG BREED SELECTORS-MOST OF THE RESULTS ARE INCORRECT. Ex i search large breed dogs, and the Pomeranian came up, which of cause is a toy dog breed!!

9. NEVER BUY A TOY/SMALL BREED DOG FOR CHILDREN UNDER 8YRS OLD, However, toy/small breeds are best suited to children 10yr+, Most shelters will only rehome toy/small breed if the children are 10yrs+, Also toy/small breeds are extremely fragile and children cannot help being clumsy, remember a toy/small breed dog could be injured or killed by accidently dropping them on the patio, also they can be killed by jumping from the couch, etc.

10. Never BUY A DOG, CAT, BIRD OR RABBIT OR GUINEA PIG AS CHRISTMAS, BIRTHDAY, NEW YEAR'S DAY OR ANY SPECIAL DAY, AS MANY PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE THE TIME, PATIENCE TO TRAIN OR LOOK AFTER A PET, ALSO MANY PEOPLE RENTING, LANDLORD'S DON'T ALLOW PETS.

11. NEVER BUY FROM A PETSTORE, BACKYARD BREEDER, PUPPY MILL OR NEWSPAPER, DON'T BUY FROM NEXT DAY PETS OR DOG BREED INFO, RESCUE AN ADULT DOG OR SHELTER PUPPY!

12. Are you willing to give up holidays to care and train and socialize your pup until its old enough to stay home around 1yr old on its own, with someone coming by to check on it, feed and water and walk it and play with it?

They need a lot of grooming. Yes even hairless. You meantioned sunscreen but you also have to exfoliate their skin and apply anti-acne cream as well as shave unwanted body hair.

For temperment they are clingy and needy and very loving and affectionate.

Dog World Magazine last month had a fascinating article on grooming your hairless dog. It showed many techniques and also step by step process of what all needs to be done to keep the dog's skin healthy. It would be worth buying the magazine if you are serious about getting one.

I am an owner and breeder of the breed. Let me start off by saying how proud I am of you for doing your homework, especially on this breed. Like the one person who said they knew someone with one and it had black heads and it smelled, that was poor care in the dog. yes the breed has dental issues usually because of the genetic defect from the hairless gene. Some hairless lose their teeth some do not, my 5 yr old hairless has all her teeth while her pups usually loose about 3 to 4. The powder puff on the other hand has only the issue of plaque build up so I recommend brushing the teeth 2 times a day and find as many as you can of oral hygene toys, chews and foods, plus getting the pups teeth cleaned once a year by a vet, there is also now a shot called "canine periodontitis vaccine" this will also help reduce the tarter so the dog does not get peridontal disease.

As for the comment on being needy, I really wouldn't call it that they are what you call attention hounds and they beleive they should always have attention no matter who it comes from.

Always check your breeders especially peple who breed more than 2 breeds and have multiple breeding pairs i have 2 female and I only breed 1 female a year alternanting the 2 with my only stud that is not a relation to either one. I usually keep a pup from each litter giving it to someone willing to show it .

The potty training issue - Yes when I got my dogs they were 8 weeks old they flew in from a breeder in Georgia and the other in Oklahoma there were issues, but with my puppies I keep them till they are 10 13 weeks this makes sure they have all thier teeth(cause they don't always get them at 8 weeks), plus it helps them learn to go outside with the mother, kind of like a cat when it teaches the kittens to use the litter box, they learn from the parent and my puppy people appreciate it! I would also say you should make sure to get a dog under contract that way you know the person is pretty good with their dogs if they are going the extra mile to put on a contract, plus also look for a health gurantee usually 6 months to a year or the longer the better. Puppies should have at least 2 distemper shots and 1 leptospirosis shot so it can't pick any thing up along the way I beleive a good breeder has the vet do the shots not do tham by themselves that just shows they are trying to keep cost down.Ususally the distemper is a 5 way(distemper-hepatitis(Cav-2)(canine parvovirus)(parainfluenza) the lepto is also there but should not be givin until second distemper. I would read up on each illness to get the idea of what they are , some vets only give certain shots so you would want to talk to your vet about the shots.

Lastly bathing is not that bad they usually love it there areso many things you can do for them I only use a oatmeal shampoo usually fresh n clean oatmeal and baking soda, this cuts down on odors and they are soft, for dry flaky skin use a mask made from fresh papaya and strawberries mashed up together with 2 teaspoons of yogurt(plain) you put it on their skin then wrap with saran wrap after 15 minutes take off the wrap and let dog eat the mush and then rinse only, with warm water. use citris fruit for oily skin or acne. selson blu wors good for that too do the masks 1 a week, carrot juice works also for infected skin dip towel in it and then apply to skin for ten minutes then rinse with warm water until infection clears.

I hope some of this helps you. I like, you did my research only after the first time I bought one with out, the dog died at the age of one I was very sad and miss him to this day that is why my kennel is named after him ,I am glad you are interested in the breed they are very rewarding its nice to come home from a long day and get nothing but affection from your dog and an added bonus is when its cold outside the hairless dogs lie under the covers makeing you nice and warm!!!
