Question:
If a dog with all its shots bit a person, should the dog be quarantined?

Last night a friend of ours got bit by our dog. One of his buddies was petting the dog, had the dog on his back. Our friend walked up got in the dogs face once, the dog growled, he commented to the dog about "oh you're growlin' at me huh.." and got in the dogs face again. Thats when he got bit. The dog almost took off half his nose, he refused to go to the hospital, he had been drinking so he tooks some liquid skin and basically glued his nostril back together. This morning his girlfriend called, and explained that they had talked to his boss, and some other people and said the dog should be quarantined. Our friend is going to the hospital today for stitches now that he feels everything.

I'd like to avoid a dispute with anyone since it was all an accident and all agreed it was. But I sense there might be if my husband doesn't comply with what our friends girlfriend wants.

I don't know about all states, but mine requires that dog bites be reported, it's the law.

Thus, when your drunk buddy went to the hospital and had to explain the wound, the doctor/nurse whoever probably had to report the incident to the local law enforcement agency.

Laws vary. Call your dog's vet and see if they have further information. If you have proof of your dog's up-to-date rabies vaccination, quarantine is usually not necessary. However, to prevent any problems, I would lay low for at least a few weeks.

I don't mean any offense to you or your dog, since I wasn't there, but truthfully, I don't feel any dog should bite anyone for any reason, unless it is truly self-defense. Just because someone gets close to the dog's face, is not an excuse for the dog to bite. What if that had been a little child on the street who got away from his/her mother and tried to kiss your dog? A bite like that would earn your dog a fast one-way trip. I would be horrified if my dog "took off half" of my friend's nose, drunk or not.

Quarantine is not necessary unless the dog is not up to date on his rabies vaccination. Basically all the quarantine would consist of if he was unvaccinated or out of date on the vaccines is to keep him in your home for 1-2 weeks and make sure no symptoms of illness appeared. Do be aware that as the injuries were fairly severe and he is going to the doctor, that you will likely be getting a visit from the police or Animal Control, since medical personnel are required to report dog bite incidences, and that you may need to comply with any local 'vicious and dangerous' dog ordinances in your are, even though the bite was provoked.

First off, this wasn't accident, this whole thing was a result of blatant stupidity brought on by alcohol and teasing a creature with a mouth full of teeth made for tearing flesh.

Anyway. Consult with a vet. They will inform you whether the dog needs to be quarantined, and how long for if so. If the vet decides that the dog doesn't need to be quarantined, then tell your friends girlfriend to speak to the Vet.

In the future, don't allow drunk fools to tease your dog.

The dog should not be quarantined. And from what you are saying, it was the person who got bit who caused the problem, and the dog was not to be blamed. The dog was in a submissive position, gave a warning, and had no choice but "flight" as he was unable to "flee".

Your friend was wrong to continue (even though it was the liquor talking) and deserved what he got (sorry!).

my advice is to keep the dog safely in a crate or room away from your friends whenever they come over again. I would have thrown anyone tormenting my dogs out of my home before a bite ever happened. If you don't want the law involved, there's no reason to quarantine the dog.

If you suspect someone is going to call the police, call your vet to report the incident. It will help you look responsible if the cops do get involved.

Dogs can tell if the person is bad or good hearted. The dog don't like him and he got in his face. He warned him but your friend got back in his face again did not listen to his warning so the dog bite him. People always need listen to the animals warnings but people don't listen so they act on only what they know how. Don't get rid of the dog its not the dog fault. It your friend. In my opinion the dog is good dog.

it really depends on where you live, but generally, no, dogs are only quarantined if they are not up-to-date on their shots. if you have documented proof that he has his rabies and distemper vaccines, you should be fine. and the girlfriend can't do a damn thing about any of it, only the guy that was bitten can. but she could persuade the guy to come after you for damages due to an aggressive animal, which means they might still lock up the dog.

First of all it was the guys fault. The dog warned him and he didn't heed it so the dog was forced to bite him.

Second of all if you have proof that he is up to date on rabies then quarantine in your own home is fine.

Always listen to your dog if they growl and warn others that he will bite if provoked.

Look forward to a lawsuit. You are responsible for your dog's actions, no matter what the situation is. You also need to pay for any medical bills the other person may incur. Be prepared to be contacted by your local animal control office. By law, the doc who sees your friend, is required to report a dog bite.

state laws vary but here in texas you are supposed to report it (i think they should report the genius who got bit). the dog doesn't need to be quarantined as you have documented proof of his status, but if he did it again, they would put him down, no questions asked.

It depends on the rules in your area. Contact your local SPCA or animal shelter and they can tell them to you.
