My father has two fairly large dogs. They each way about 150 pounds. They have fleas pretty bad and I tried frontline plus, but it appears to have barely helped.
I've heard that you can buy pills that help kill the fleas, or prevent the life-cycle.
What is the best non prescription flea pill you can get?
I want nothing but the best for these poor guys, but I'm not in a position where I can bring them to a vet mainly because they're not my dogs, but I would still like to get a non-prescription pill that is effective.

Thank you for any advice you can give.
I appreciate it a lot and I bet the dogs will as well. :)

The only anti flea pill available over the counter is Capstar. You can buy it from Petco and Petsmart for around $30-$40 for 6 tablets. Capstar does not kill flea eggs or offer protection against re-infestation. For this you will need to use prescription-only Comfortis or Trifexis.

@Lady Knight: Re the Frontline+, it depends where you live. Works fine for my dogs too.

I think the pill you are talking about is Capstar. It will kill the fleas the dogs have in a matter of hours but it does nothing to prevent them from coming back. There is no flea preventative pill that is non prescription.

Fleas seem to have built a tolerance to Advantage & Frontline products. The best product on the market right now is Vectra. http://www.vectrapet.com/ Don't even waste your money on over the counter collars, or other products.

Most vets don't insist on seeing pets for flea meds as long as they have been seen before. Call the vet & see.

You need to treat the whole house, wash bedding frequently & vacuum daily. Be sure to store or empty the vacuum outside.

Here's a fairly inexpensive way to treat the house & it really does work. http://www.richsoil.com/diatomaceous-earth.jsp

If you go this route be sure to stick with the food grade for inside. Hardware stores carry a non food grade that can be used in the yard.

Treat the yard with agricultural lime. This is best done when there is rain in the weather forecast. Sprinkle the yard with lime, just before the rain begins. The rain washes the lime down onto the ground. The lime kills the fleas, and will help keep other insects under control, and is safe for dogs.

There are natural repellents that can be used. A spray can be made by mixing certain natural oils (such as lavender, tea tree, etc) with water and spritzing the dogs (you can ask your local health food/ herb store. Brewer's yeast as a daily supplement also seems to help with flea control.

For my dogs, I get Comfortis from my vet. They've now started making a heartworm /flea preventative from combining the Comfortis with Interceptor.

I don't know the name of the stuff we use, but if your in a urgent situation, I would give the dogs a bath. Wash them first in dawn, then wash them again with flea shampoo. Dry them off and then sprinkle them with flea powder. Then vacuum all your carpets and couches. Be sure to burn the vacuum bag when you are done as fleas can escape from the bag. Wash all the dog's bedding immediately. I'm suprised Frontline + didn't work. It worked like magic on my dog. Are you sure you got the correct dose?

Frequently no longer. I dont feel there are rarely any flea medicines for pregnant cats, ask your vet, although. It is a chemical, so it is bad for the kittens, and on account that it can be a mist, if some received onto her belly her kittens would get it of their mouths once they nurse, when they're born. Always riskless just to determine with the vet. Just right luck!!

Fleas in some locations have developed a tolerance to Frontline Plus. You might want to try K9 Advantix II, which works wonderfully for my own dogs. I have also heard good things about Revolution.

Get Capstar flea tablets. They work amazingly fast. 30 minutes to an hour, all the fleas on the dog are dead.

As an alternative, I recommend washing both dogs with flea repellant shampoo and covering all your carpets with Borax (detergent booster, boric acid) over night, vacuum it up in the morning. Wash all bedding, upholstery, etc with regular detergent plus Borax. Wash the dogs with the flea repellant shampoo once every week or two.

Pills can help too, but it is still a good idea to treat your yard. Try the front line and treating the yard every 3 weeks. If you don't get rid of the sourse no treatment will work.
