The Sussex was developed in Sussex in southern England. The dog is a low, compact spaniel and is comparable in look to the Clumber Spaniel. They can be slow paced, but can have a clownish and energetic temperament.

Sussex spaniels are loving and sociable and are less excited and active at home than many other gundogs. Historically however, there have also been examples of both black and sandy coloured Sussex Spaniels
