Back in August we rescued a 1 year old Staffy *****, she was fine at first but for about a month or so she's been showing some strange behaviour. Such as she has started pooping and peeing in the house without warning, she shows no signs of wanting to go out so we haven't been letting her out therefore she messes in the house. Also in the back garden we have a set of empty shelves and she sits/lays on the bottom shelf crying, whimpering and growling and poking her head out and then pulling it back in like she was being held in a confined space. She weaves in and out of table and chair legs over and over again. This is really odd behaviour and we don't know why/what it is or how to stop it, Can someone help?

Clearly anxious behaviour....... restrict her space, meaning crate training, the 'space' she has is too much for her to deal with and it happens a lot with many dogs, reduce the space they feel they have to 'look after' and they feel safe and anxiety decreases, no healthy dog will poo and pee in their bed....... also instead of putting her out in the back garden, put her on lead and walk her, this will increase her confidence, stop her boredom, help to socialise her....call into your butchers a couple of times a week an get her raw bone, this will help her too as dogs know that chewing relieves anxiety, it also will make her tired and stops her getting bored so she will sleep ..and get into a routine of going out with her stand silently and wait until she toilets, then you can praise her......... her 'odd' behaviour sounds like she is bored, needs some additional exercise and work.................... the 'weaving' maybe to get your attention, so change the game to your game, lead walking and reducing her anxiety.................

Not only should YOU be dictating when she goes out, if she wasn't like this from the start, I'd have to consider whether she has a medical reason for suddenly doing this - much as if she has a UTI going on, I'm not sure why she should be poohing indoors as well. Poohing is rather easier to sort out, provided she doesn't have diarrhoea, because she should only need to have a BM as many times, plus one, as the meals she's eating. In other words if she's having breakfast and a second meal around 5 pm, then she should empty first thing (which will probably be what's left over from yesterday's meals not her breakfast). Then another during the morning and again during the afternoon, or late evening.

I'd suggest she's in pain, and going into a confined space would suggest this - she's trying to get away from the pain. That's one suggestion.

The weaving in and out is odd. Sign of stress? Sign of something else medical (I'm gone to the possibility of a brain tumour).

Whatever the case, we can only guess. Take her to your vet and explain what's been going on so he can examine her, and do what further testing he feels is needed.

For the possibility of a UTI causing her need to pee (lots?) collect a sample of her urine and take it with her when you see your vet. Unfortunately with Rescue dogs, you often inherit what I call 'baggage' and who knows what she had to cope with in the first year of her life.

Please don't crate this very nervous dog because nobody knows what she suffered, the last thing she needs is to be in prisoned. let's look at her behaviour she was obviously just allowed to poo or wee in her old home so you need to walk with her until she does her business in the garden then praise her with a treat of chicken. You must go outside with this poor dog as I feel she has suffered trauma hence the peeking crying from the safety of the bottom shelf, it's like she is hiding herself but warning whoever hurt her.

You're extremely kind to take this dog on but the answer lies in walking her until she poos she needs 3 walks a day, perhaps a 2 mile round trip.

I am certain this poor dog will come right in the end.

Please read this link, I live in the UK and these dogs were cruelly treated locked in crates all night and most of the day, crates are simply not natural to any animal, look at animals kept in Zoos they are tormented out of their minds. Keep up the good work.
