Hello! My family's Corgi, Cowboy, has gotten to the point now where he is unable to walk. He slides around, but I think the discomfort of moving has caused him to become more and more stationary which just causes him to be still when he does eventually move. For a long time we used acupuncture which helped A LOT, but now his 6 session plan has ended and we are looking into other options. I would really like to get him a wheel chair since his front legs work great. Store bough wheel chairs are absurdly expensive, so I've decided to construct one myself!

So! Does anyone have a site they can link to me on how to make a dog wheel chair? I am mainly looking for one that uses PVC pipes because they seem easy and inexpensive. I also need the materials to be fairly common and easy to find in a store like Fleet Farm or Menards. Thank you so much!

Oh, and just because he's adorable I posted his picture so enjoy! :)

Cowboy is so cute!!

Anyway, I did a little research and here's what came up:

Video: DIY Dog Wheel chair (2 wheels) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSrww0TNNkc

This video tells you how to get the right measurements for your dog's size, and pictures of tools and equipment required

A text tutorial: http://www.ehow.com/how_4707911_build-dog-wheel-chair.html

Also has extra tips to ensure a bit more comfort for the dog

Text and image tut: http://doggywheels.blogspot.co.uk/

This one has much bigger wheels than the other wheel chairs I've seen so far

Text guide (more of a blog on what he did, not so much a tutorial): http://www.instructables.com/id/Dog-wheelchair/

Has great advice about comfort, materials and extra info and tips that you should take note of (e.g having wheels with "larger diameter to roll over obstacles easier and have some shock absorption with their pneumatic (air-filled) tires.")

Also, here are some images of different dog Wheel Chairs:

I really hope this helped and good luck with constructing this for Cowboy, have a lovely day! :)

Google "used canine wheelchairs." Since dogs do not live very long and paralyzed dogs usually have even shorter life spans, you should be able to get a used one. It might be better than building one.

For instance, http://www.handicappedpets.com/about-handicapped-pets/about-us.html has a lot of info and some information about financing.

If you want to build one, Google "dog wheelchair plans" and there are a couple sites with instructions online.

I had a paralyzed dog, she lived for a year in a kiddie pool in out dining room where she was still part of the family. We would put a scarf around her middle to take her out for exercise and mental stimulation. Unfortunately she had recurring urinary tract infections we could not cure and she died a year after becoming paralyzed, but she had a happy pain-free life with lots of attention until that time.

Best of luck with your corgi, he's a cutie with a great smile. ;-)
