My son really wants a dog and I am allergic. Not severely but... Promised to look into getting a low allergy one. Appreciate any info including how to source free/low cost as money is tight.

You want a non-shedding dog. There are many breeds now available, including the "new" Labradoodles. Chances are you wont find one cheap from any breeder, but you can go to a rescue site and see whats available. Some non-shedders who are also easy on allergic people are: Airedale Terrier, Australian Terrier,

Basenji, Bichon Frise, Boston Terrier, Bouvier des Flandres, Cairn Terrier (Toto from Wizard of Oz!) Chinese Crested, Havanese, Kerry Blue Terrier ,Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Poodle (all types), Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, Tibetan Terrier,, Welsh Terrier

West Highland White Terrier, Xoloitzcuintli ,

Yorkshire Terrier

Some of these need special grooming and some arent really great with kids, but you can check out these breeds and more at www. dogbreedfacts.com. As for myself, I have had several Bichon Frises, and they can be great with kids and other pets, and they are hardy and very, very intelligent!! They arent too big either! Good luck on your hunt!

Typically dogs considered to be 'aggressive' include, rotties, pitbulls, dobermans, or pretty much breed of dog associated with protection, and violence (dog fighting rings, and potentially police dogs even). I have seen german shepherds in the category of 'aggressive' as well. It is not a matter of the actual breeds temperament, but people's assumption of their temperament based upon poor human treatment, engagement in immoral activities that sends the wrong impressions. And most likely the apartment is saying this to avoid the uneducated people's fear of the breed, and potential law suits because of it. Chances are (I've seen it) just because you saw a dog is some breed they have this mental picture that it is horrible, and they don't understand that like people there are exceptions, even to misconceptions. Be honest with the renters, and try to explain the misconceptions and thoughts, but it is based upon their decisions. Best of Luck, and she is an adorable puppy.

Here is a web site that lists the low allergen dogs:

Remember that "free" is not free. I would look for a rescue dog! Although you will have to pay an adoption fee, the dog will most likely come spayed or neutered and will all age appropriate shots.

BUT...I understand how alluring owning pets can be. However, the responsible thing might be to wait. If you cannot afford to purchase or adopt a dog, what will you do when it needs to see a vet? How are you going to get all of the supplies it needs? Maybe wait until your money situation is a little more stable?

Poodles are definitely a lower allergy dog. And well mannered/tempered for children. Very loyal and a good small family dog. Happy hunting!

My neighbor was allergic and her kids wanted a dog so bad.

She researched alot and found out that the best kind of dog for allergies was a Miniature Schnauzer.

She never had any allergy problems with that kind of dog.

Good luck :)

Poodles are a good choice, but they come with regular trips to the groomer. Poodle mixes are NOT all hypo allergenic, so be careful there. My daughter dog sits for a family that is allergic that has Westhighland Terriers and I know of another person who is allergic who is doing well with a Husky. Look at your local shelter or on petfinder.

poodles are low allergy cause they don't shed there hair like other dogs which causes the allergy.

check in the news paper and depending on where you live most states and countries will have poodle socieity so do some reasearch on the net.

i think a bichon frise would b best since they dont shed and are small dogs there not really a problem for people wit allergies, and i say bichon frise not other dogs that dont shed because i have one and i love her lol n my mom is allergic n she has no problem wit her. they could b expensive but if u search real good u can find them for cheap cuz my aunt got hers from a local breeder and only payed 300 dollars which is very good for a bichon they are usually a lot more plus she got it as a puppy 8 weeks old

Most allergies are caused from the dander off the animals. The dander is attached to the hair. Non-sheddng breeds are poodles, bichon frissae and poodle mixes

i recommend going to the local animal shelter then. find a nice mutt...if it's mixed with poodle it wont shed and that will help or fully eliminate your allergies...most tiny dogs dont shed..shih tzus yorkies etc. . also cheap at the shelter and they come with their shots done and fixed and some even put in micro chips in case they run away.happy hunting!

dog's that don't shed don't affect some allergic people at all. But if the money is tight i don't recommend a dog at all because their vet bills are expensive. i recommend poodles.

Dogs that are not fed poor quality kibble also known as crapinabag and dogs who have not been over vaccinated are far less likely to have allergies.
