I'm just watching Animal Cops on Animal planet, and every time it's on, there's always a dog on some kind of chain.

What is the point??

I'd really like to know that, too. My neigbhors got a puppy and have left it outside and chained for the last 7 months. It doesn't have shelter except a partial covering under a car hitch wagon full of junk.

I talked to them about their dog and at my expense I got the dog spayed and I got it dewormed and I got it basic shots. I worked out a deal so I can let it off the chain and play with her when I am home.

They are assholes who just got the dog for free somewhere, probably from another asshole giving away free puppies in a Walmart parking lot. They got this dog on a spur of the moment decision and have not invested a nickel in taking care of her. The dog is sweet and deserves so much better. They will probably leave the dog with me when they move, which won't be soon enough for me.

The ones who do it will tell you that it's to keep it safe and stop it running off! Have they never heard of a fence? Or the little trick of training a dog to come back when called? As for those who say it's a guard dog and aggressive, WHY? Chained in a garden it can't guard anything. A burglar would just bypass it! If it's aggressive then either owner or other people or dogs have made it that way. Why they even bother getting a dog I don't know. Any idiot knows a dog is a pack animal > it's not that difficult to realise that means they NEED company!

I'd like to chain these people up in my garden and just give them a plate of dry food, a cup of water, a too small box to shelter in (I'm more generous than some as most don't even bother with shelter) and no company for hours on end! A few weeks of that and they might then understand how the dog feels. Of course they'd kick up a fuss and shout and hurt or possibly kill themselves trying to get free but that's OK, I wont hear them over the TV! If another human came along occasionally and beat them up that's OK, but don't expect me to dress any wounds, and lets get some puppies in to tease them occasionally.

I'm a German Shepherd owner I didn't need to train her to guard by making her aggressive! By being free to roam her territory, (she's never just put out in the garden, the house door is always open.) She doesn't need to be aggressive, she just needs to tell us there's a threat, my dog is rarely alone and knows she is bottom of the pack, aggression is some-one elses job. If someone broke into the house when she was alone, I'd expect her to give them a verbal warning before she went for them! If they didn't choose to take it, they'd only have theirselves to blame.

Sorry for the rant! but this 'practise' infuriates me!

Some defend it as to keep the dog from running off , some say to keep their dog from fighting with another dog , some say fencing is too expensive....it is a bullsh*t

I have a 70 lb pit bull , or should I say a 70 lb spoiled rotten lap puppy

I take her out every hour to run, get fresh air , and to sniff everything over and over again , not to mention to do her business , Dogs are not complex , they crave human contact , and attention , I know pits become frightened when left all alone , If anyone is going to have a dog , they need to be responsible owners , the same goes for people who have children but , for some reason this country you have to take a test to drive , a test for a job , a test to get out of school , and a test to get in to College , why are there no tests to own a pet or have a child .....The dog is left out defenseless tied to a chain , and I know with Pits they count on humans to protect them , some get pits to guard a house , wrong dog , you need a burglar alarm system to protect your pit , as soon as a stranger enters your house the pit may bark , but all it sees is a set of hands that can pet it ... I think people should be required to take a test , and recieve a certificate for which ever breed of dog they have , not one certificate for all breeds , just the one you choose to have , and do it everytime you get a different breed , and of course the same should go for those who breed children as well , four different certificates two for women breeding a boy or a girl , and the other for the to be dad with a boy or a girl .....and I am not any kind of activist ,or nothing like that , I am a parent , and a pet owner ..

I understand completely what you mean.... I HATE seeing a dog chained up, or worse actually have the chain round its neck, I dont know why people do it? Perhaps the can't be bothered training the dog, or dont want him under their feet indoors?

Some peolpe dont realise the weight of one of these chains.... imagine carrying it round all day...ouch! If they are scared the dog will run away or bite someone, then why dont they build a run with a kennel inside? I know it may be pricey, but they should think about that before getting the dog.

It breaks my heart when I see them on animal cops. x

This is how idiots keep dogs. They chain them and expect this way their home is guarded. They also are afraid the dog will run away. Of course the dog will run. These people are cruel and stupid why would any intelligent dog want to hang with these fools. It's a good way to come home and find your dog has hung itself. The animal cops confiscate these dogs from the owners.

The dumb morons that do it think it's the best way to keep their dog from getting out, even though the dog is more likely to strangle itself. I hate seeing dogs chained up all the time or in tiny little enclosed spaces. What's the point of even getting a dog if it's just going to be in a tight little space all the time? I just don't get people sometimes.

to keep the dog in one area.

most people on there do it to keep the dog from getting loose. (which would probably be better for most of them)

People are dumb. The chain and animal up, throw out a bowl of water and a pan of food and they think the dog is being treated humanly.

Just because the dog is not getting beat doesn't meant that it is being taken care of.

It's sad.

Dog's need love and attention.

You know I really dont know. I think its just that people dont want anything to do with the dogs and just chain em up and know that the dog is in one place. I dont really know why the person's really keep the dogs when they are literally in a dump. They are that lazy to take them to a rescue. Its bad enough they are suffering in a bad environment but then you have to make the dog suffer too.

Not sure.. The only things chaining does is increase the liklihood that the dog will kill itself, or get attacked by another animal, Oh yeah and it builds aggression in a dog.. Lazy / cheap people chain their dogs out.

I don't know the program you're talking about, but I think most people chain their dog to a post because it means they don't have to bother with them, they can just leave the dog there and know it won't go anywhere. Only ignorant, horrible people chain dogs to posts.

It warms my heart to see so many caring people out there. I must agree with most of you. It is inhumane and they should not be allowed to keep a dog. Now if people treat their dogs that way, do they treat their fellow humans much differently ?A a point to ponder. Sorry, I do not belong in this ugly world... hell on earth ..what?

I agree with you fully.... its sick inhuman and downright cruel.

I think that some dog owners should be chained to a post themselves to experience the feeling... what happened to the old saying " a dog is not for Christmas .. its for life"

I thether my dogs to a post when I'm outside gardening and I want them out with me. They lay under a tree in the shade and watch the world go by. What's the point? - I don't want them to run into the road.
2007-09-19 21:20:52 UTC
i too always watch animal cops (god am i missing it actually) i see how you would say that because all the dogs on there are cruelty cases and have inbedded chains and collars but it is mainly to stop it from roaming free and getting injured and killed.
2007-09-19 22:33:38 UTC
I have my dog on a little tie-out when he wants to go outside and I have to be working inside. It's just thin metal covered in plastic so it's not heavy at all and keeps him from running away (I rent and don't have a fence).
2007-09-19 21:14:15 UTC
Its to make sure that the dogs don't go anywhere so that they can continue abusing them.

I hate people who do cruel things to animals...I just don't see how they can bring themselves to do it. I guess they must have problems with themselves that there batteling and then end up taking it out on dogs or other animals. I think its absolutely aweful.

animal cops is a good show... i watch it as well. there is no point to chaining a dog or any animal to a post. The sick people who do think it i makes them powerful over the dog. chaining a dog to a post only makes them angry. Unless you spend time with them... then that is another story. I remember as a kid we did not have a fence... so we tied ours out... but they had too much chain for their own good... they had enough that they could run as if they were not tied. We had no neighbors either... so they were able to run quite far,. another thing...the people who tie them out and then let the collar become grown in... that is sick. ours never had that problem and one of them was a lab. he was tied out for 10 or 12 years. stupidity... that is all it is.!

Oh i watch that show all the time. People just dont care about there dogs so they will just leave them there. TO ALL U PEOPLE WHO DONT CARE ABOUT ANIMALS CAN KICK THEMSELVES IN THE HEAD AND DIE CUZZ ONE DAY SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN
2007-09-19 21:15:21 UTC
animal cruelty plain and simple ..you know for every person they find that does that to an animal they should have it as a punishment that you tie them to a post..

but look at how they are living ..do they care? obviously they do not.

the real animals are the ones that do these things to these poor defenseless creatures. I have three dogs, two pits, and a yorkie, would never do that to my kids.

Ignorance...not wanting to care for the dog..I don't know.
