this morning my dog got under the christmas tree and ate some chocolate. he didn't eat a lot just some truffles, he already regurgitated the chocolate and ive been giving him water and making sure he goes outside a lot. he seems to be fine but im worried because every once in awhile he shivers for like a second then goes back to being fine (he also does this sigh thing when he shivers)
will he be ok and do i need to call a vet? (i cant go see a vet or any near me because there has been a snow storm and most stores and offices r closed)

Toxic thresholds for dogs are as follows:

1oz Milk Chocolate per 1lb body weight. 12 oz (3/4 lb) for your dog.

1oz Semi-Sweet/Dark Chocolate per 3lb of body weight. 4 oz (1/4lb) for your dog.

1oz Bakers Chocolate per 9lb of body weight. Appx. 1.3oz for your dog.

If your dog has gotten near any of these toxic levels, you need to call a vet and find out what you should do. Frankly, I'm surprised that a phone call to the vet wasn't your first step originally.

My vet recommends feed a LARGE meal immediately after consumption - like 2-3 times normal meal size.

ADD--->Mama Tex I believe the name was has all the accurate information. The only thing to be concerned about as I said below if the truffles have high concentration of dark chocolate. Still be warned though, because your dog is going to have a very bad stomach ache, and you don't want to make it worse. That's why I suggested checking the gums and such and keep him confined so he can't run around and keep getting sick and will stay hydrated.<---

Depends on the type of chocolate and exactly how much. Dark chocolate contains much more chocolate than milk chocolate. Eating three pieces of small dark chocolate truffles is going to be more lethal than milk chocolate.

My vet has always said it being lethal is something like 1lb of chocolate to 20lbs in a dog. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken (my brain is pretty scattered today) and will give you accurate measurements. But every type of dog is different.

Your dog is only 12lbs, I think this might be a very bad thing. Feel around your dog's abdomen, is it bloated? Check your dog's gums they should be nice and pink, if they're getting very white then your dog could be getting dehydrated. Don't make your dog throw up anymore. Try and keep him laying down or confined, put him in his crate or a playpen or something if you have to, and keep him close by to monitor. You'd be surprised how quickly something can come on while your dog runs off into the next room!

Try your best to hurry into the vet, if you absolutely can't call an emergency hot line and ask them for help, they'll tell you the best things you can do, and will ask you questions that will help assess your dog's condition.

Good luck!

If the dog threw up the chocolate, and has been drinking, etc. then it sounds like you're doing all you can for the dog aside from taking it to the vet for an exam. Keep an eye on the dog, and if the shaking gets worse or you notice any strange behavior, the dog will need a vet asap.

You do need to know that shaking is a sign of distress in many dogs, and doesn't mean they are cold. A dog that's stressed or in pain/discomfort will shake.

take him to the vet, it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure he's fine though, a little bit of chocolate is not going to hurt a dog but too much can upset their stomach and kidneys it could end up killing them in severe cases but highly doubt your dog ate that much, just have him checked out.

the shivering could be from the sugar, it gives them spasms.

It's not cumulative, except in the short term (meaning hours, not years). The dangerous stuff for dogs in chocolate is called theobromine, it can cause heart arrhythmia or heart attack. Accidental ingestion of chocolate cake is not a big deal, though, same with most kinds of candy; they actually don't contain all that much actual chocolate solids. Baking chocolate, very dark chocolate, and cocoa are things that are most dangerous because they are pure or nearly pure chocolate.

Mama Tex is correct, the darker the chocolate the worse it is, that being said, they have to eat a lot of it. It can be very dangerous, but it is good that he threw it up and got it out of his system. Feed him steamed plain rice to absorb anything left in his stomach, you can add plain chicken or cottage cheese if that helps him eat it. Also, even if you do call the vet and ask their opinion they typically tell you to bring in the animal and can't say otherwise due to liability. Good Luck!!

Well

If he threw most of it up you should be fine! Feel his heart, if it's beating extremely fast then you should be worried! My Pomeranian ate chocolate once and her heart was racing so fast because chocolate has caffine in it. Just keep an eye on him! Hope it works out!

i would say he would be fine as long as he didn't eat that much he should be ok i would call a pet hospital or emergency vet line or something if your vet isn't open or You cant leave and they might be able to tell you something else you can do i hope everything goes well

Not enough to cause an issue other than upset stomach/. It takes a lot of chocolate to kill a dog and the darker the worse it is.

Feed him 1 tsp. of hydrogen peroxide for every ten pound he weighs. ( one teaspoon ) and that'll make him throw up whatever is in his stomach.
