We have two terriers (Australians) and love them dearly. We would not have anything else, but would not recommend terriers to anybody. The three terriers you have listed are true working terriers. They have smart little independent minds. This makes obedience training harder than other breeds. What you find is fun (sit, down and come), they find boring. Going jogging with you is not the right type of exercise. They do better at a dog park where they can really have the freedom to run and explore. I think things may be crazy around your house without a small yard of some type. We know people that have all of these breeds. – The grooming requirements are about the same. Dogs that don’t deposit their hair on the world need grooming. Some breeds like the Bichon Frise require a lot of grooming (6 weeks). Our dogs get groomed 2 to 3 times a year. These 3 require more than that. About the West Highland white terrier, our vet told us that they are the number one breed with allergy problems. I would suggest you look for a dog that is more suitable to apartment living. These are a number of books and web sites that can help you. - I suggest that you contact a vet for advice. Do you have a friend that has a dog where you can get a referral? You should have a vet before getting a dog.

Schnauzers are very..varied you could say. Their temperament, as any other breeds, is literally from one end of the spectrum to the other. I have worked with several, some cocking more of an attitude than the next. I have worked with several Australian Terriers and Shih tzus as well and out of all these choices I would hands down say the Australian Terrier. They are very high energy dogs with a bounce in their step and are very outgoing. They love to please and will do just about anything for their owner. Very affectonate kind dogs that you can go hiking with and make for a good jogging partner.

i'm a mini-shnauzer fan.they are intelligent, obedient yet have definite, bold and fearless personalities.unlike the equally courageous and intelligent standard schnauze, the mini is more portable-we take "harry" everywhere.both make gr8 watchdogs, and the mini's do not think of themselves as little-harry attacked a buffalo at a buffalo farm once-and the buffalo ran from him! i dont know much about aussie terriers or shitzuh's,tho.just thought i would share my schnauzer thoughts.ps-we have 3 other dogs-a cairn a tibetan terrier and a pitbull/chow/tibetan terrier mix.but we always have a schnauzer and always will.when we lost harry 1,we got harry 2.its the one dog we will always have because of their wonderful traits.our other dogs are wonderful, but the schnauze is so smart,he's like a child.

well, i have a standard schnauzer and love her to death, but they're not for everyone!

i agree with checking out the AKC website and would also highly recomend that you visit the breeders. they love their dogs and are usually more than happy to let an interested person come visit so they can make an informed decision.

the standard schnauzer will most likely be the most expensive of the breeds you listed, but they are wonderful dogs and the breeders do an excellent job of keeping the lines healthy.

if you decide that the standard would compliment your life or want to know more about them, please contact me and i would be more than happy to tell you about my experiences, recomend breeders, and fill you in on breed characteristics.

good luck in your quest for the perfect companion!

EDIT: Standards are a bit more independent than the minis. they also bark less and are a bit less snippy. they are highly intellegent (mine opens doors) and need lots of excercise. they are great running partners but don't know when to stop! :)

Think you need to go to the AKC website and read all about the qualities and traits of these breeds and decide for yourself.

Ive owned Standard Schnauzers, Mini Schnauzers and Shih Tzus myself....here's a run down of my experience;)

Mini Schnauzer- VERY intelligent. Almost too intelligent. With that intelligence comes a tenancy to become bored easily and get in to trouble. My mini schnauzer, Baron, loved playing in the water, and if I was taking a bath or shower I had to lock the bathroom door because when he heard the water running he could run at the door grip the door knob with his claws and turn it while kicking the door with his back legs and open it. It usually took him a few tries, so you'd usually hear *wimper wimper* *click* BANG! *click* BANG! *click click* BANG! SPLASH!. Even though Baron and Tasha were both great dogs, I have seen other people that get mini schnauzers that dont know how to train them properly (they can be VERY stubborn dogs, it goes along with the intelligence) and the dog is a holy terror. Biting neighbors, running away from their owners, yapping incesantly at passersby. They are great dogs, if you know what you are dealing with.

Standards- seem a little easier to handle than minis. they seem (in my experience) more laid back and less hyper than minis (my schnauzer, Chelsea's favorite past time is laying in my lap on the couch and watching tv). They are still very smart, and tend to get in to trouble because of it if they arent challenged. My way of challenging Chelsea is teaching her a new trick every month and playing her favorite game called "Go find it!" (we hide a treat in the house, or a toy in the yard and tell her to go find it. We used to be able to hide them well enough that they took an hour to find, but it trained her to use her nose better, and now it takes no time at all. We've resorted to hiding toys up trees to keep her occupied). Ive owned a lot of dogs in my life and standard schnauzers are tied with shih tzus for my favorite breed. Though, in my experience, males tend to be a little territorial and sometimes dog aggressive.

Shih tzu-- All of my shih tzus can be called snobby, but they are great dogs. They are smart, but a little bit more of a "what's in it for me?" attitude than my schnauzers. I can tell my schnauzers "Jump and you get a cookie!" and they say "YAY! A cookie!!" and jump. My shih tzus lift their head up from their pillows and say "what kind of cookie? Is it worth getting up for?". My shih tzus though, are little dolls. They want their hair messed with and brushed. They want to be told how beautiful they are and they want someone to carry them everywhere they go. In my experience, though, shih tzus tend to be one person dogs. My schnauzer loves everyone in the house and regards each of us as an alpha. My (well, no, my dad's) shih tzus have a different person that they adopted, not the other way around. Snickers, even though I bought him and took care of him as a puppy, claimed my dad. He loves me still, but if my dad and I say "Come here Snicks" at the same time, it is no contest, dad would win. Mitzie claimed my mom even though she was supposed to be my dad's dog, and my moms shih tzu Bonnie claimed my grandma. Shih tzus very much pick their owners.

really, if you want a dog to play with constantly, go with a mini or aussie, if you want something to cuddle and pamper and snuggle, go with a shih tzu, if you want something in the middle, go with a standard;)
