Why are (most) people so quick to judge Great Danes?

The Great Dane is a very large but extremely gentle dog breed. Many people would never even think of getting a Great Dane as a pet, simply because they think a dog so large would need excessive excersise and be hard to control. Generally speaking, they are incorrect. Great Danes are a very gentle dog breed, great with kids and are easily controllable if trained from puppyhood. They don't need any more than a 20 - 30 minute walk daily. Although Great Danes do have a large appetite and human food is best not left on counters or tables, they make up for this with their loving personality and companionship. Great Danes are very low grooming due to short hair and need a shower usually every two months or when needed. They are a generally healthy dog, but must be kept at healthy healthy weight, they are also prone to Hip Dysplasia like all large dogs. I hope this changed your thoughts about Great Danes, and if you know the answer to my initial question, please post it! I would also like to hear your comments on Great Danes, so post them to! (Also, if there are any spelling mistakes or jumbled words, it is because I am on an iPod Touch)

I love Great Danes. People are ignorant. People judge every breed. That is why people think Pitbulls and Rottweilers are killers when they are devoted companions. All you can do is educate them.

I personally have never had or heard someone badly judge Great Danes. While some people may be leery of them just based on their size alone, they are great family dogs and to me, do not come off as a threatening or "scary" breed by any means. Where I live, I have only met one, and he was a great dog. In terms of taking negative comments against your beloved breed, let it go. Try not to get all tied up over what other people think. If you love the breed then that is great! I have two Labrador Retrievers and a lot of people make the comment that they are a "thick headed" breed, meaning they are dumb. As for my Bassets, people usually laugh at him because they think he looks funny. But do I care? No. I love my dogs for who they are and the breed that they are, that's why I chose them. If someone wants to talk negatively about them, then so be it.

Honestly I have never heard bad things about great danes except maybe they have bad health. Something about them is very charming, however it is not unreasonable for someone not to want a huge dog. For someone who has owned a yorkie for many years, a great dane would be a huge responsibility.

I have never heard anyone say anything negative about Danes.....most people (at least the ones I know) are aware that they are not aggressive dogs.

I have no interest in any of the giant breeds simply because they are so short lived.

I have never heard anything bad about Great Danes. Just that they are lovely, friendly dogs that would lick you to death given a chance..

I wouldn't have one around small children though just because of their size and exuberance. Also, the low life expectancy would put me off owning one.

I have had two Great Danes, at different times, both rescues. Both males.

I had more fun with both of them because of their size. I taught one to back up & sit on my lap & he would do that to other people & you should see the look in their eyes. Oh so funny.

I think they are the comedians of the dog world.

One of them was hard to keep in the yard cause he could jump the fence with ease. So I tied two truck tires to a chain he drug behind him. One day he managed to jump the fence but could not go anywhere cause he was on one side of the fence & the tires on the other side. I went out to correct this & that little SOB sat back on his haunches & bared his teeth at me. Oh, that got my goat right away, I tied into him with intentions to scare the snot right out of him . It worked & he was soon down on the ground showing extreme submission. I had to wipe the smile off my face & keep my voice tone down low. He was just scared cause he was caught in the act. & his fear of what was going to happen caused him to bare his teeth. Flight or fight, he took the fight cause he could go nowhere. That was the only time I had any thing like that happen with either one of them.

No one had ever said anything negative about either one of them. Infact most everyone got a kick out of them. They are a neat breed but so short lived. I lost both of them at the age of 7.

So many wonderful stories I could tell about them. They are a great breed.

i think you worry too much about what people "think" in the first place. i mean you finished your statement with..."(Also, if there are any spelling mistakes or jumbled words, it is because I am on an iPod Touch)" . whats that about, who gives a poop? some people like big dogs, some people like little dogs..... i like cats better than dogs. im lazy and cats bury their own poop.
