Question:
Dog Birthing Problems?

I'm writing a story about a family who has a dog(and parts are from the dogs perspective), but the dog ends up having puppies with the neighborhoods 'Tough Dog'. The dog is a mix of many different breeds, and is really large, while the main character dog(Bell) is small and pure bred. (I haven't decided which breed yet though, so you can help me decide that too^-^) But to make the book dramatic, I was trying to find things that can go wrong during a pup birth? Something that would affect Bell greatly. I know there's still births and I think it's called a breach birth(when they're born upside down?) But I was wondering if you knew of something dramatic that could go wrong and then a way that the Human girl can save Bell and the pups life? If you have any ideas, let me know! Thanks!

Bell? Not Belle? Weird, but ok.

I think it's pretty bad that you are dramatizing backyard breeding and making it a hero story.

Few whelping problems can be helped by giving the dog water or walking her around. Things are usually done by trained experienced adults, either vets or responsible breeders. Unless you are going to have Human Girl cut open Bell's belly for a c-section or administer oxytocin, it's going to be hard.

Better would be a puppy who isn't coming out of her sac and isn't breathing, so Human Girl has to tear the sac and stimulate the puppy. Most mother dogs would be greatly disturbed by a puppy that's dying.

Well, there are pups that are stillborn or born premature, then you have runts...which are usually small or larger often called giant 'runts'.

As for the father many large breeds could fit the bill such as Bernese Mountain dogs, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, Great Pyrenees, Tibetan Mastiffs, American Bulldogs, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, Akita Inus, Dobermans, Wolfdogs which are a mix between a wolf and a dog such as a husky, malamute or shepherd. Bloodhounds can be big too, there's also St. Bernards and the South African Mastiff.

In one of my story ideas, one of my dog characters is a mix of various breeds and wild dogs such as the Rottweiler, Basenji, Red Wolf, Border Collie and others, making him a large wolf like dog.

I would suggest doing research on mixed breed dogs and purebreds.

If you do publish your book, I recommend posting it on webook.com for feedback.

I'm curious about how your story will turn out

Large stud dog - bred to small female, means she'll need a Cesarean or won't be able to have the puppies (w/o dying during the birthing process). That's provided she survives the entire pregnancy with puppies that are going to be too large for her to carry to term, in all probability.

Once upon a time a stupid owner let her dog get prengant. The clueless owner thought it would be fun to have cute little puppies and the dog got really sick. The owner was too clueless to take the dog to the vet and the dog and all the puppies died. The end, true story.

But if you want to make it fun, then the pups could be to large for the mom (because the father is a larger breed) and the owner saves the dog by doing the right thing and taking her to the vet :)

Hope that was helpfull xD
