Question:
Puppy with worms?
Blah~!!!

When I got him I automatically started giving him worm medicine. I know all puppies are born with them. They are coming out in his stool... but they are still alive.

Let's just say I didn't give him medicine... would the worms still come out with his stool? Is the worm medicine really working? They don't seem to be dead...

If you were using the correct wormer the worms would be dead. Its likely that you are seeing them because he is overloaded with worms. There are several different types of wormers on the market that are good but since you have not gotten a fecal exam you will want to use a broad spectrum wormer. I would use Safe-guard or Panacur C. You can get panacur c the cheapest at vet america. There is a link for them here

You need to worm him/her for 3 days strait then in 2 weeks you need to repeat the process and agian in 2 more weeks to be totally rid of the worms esp if the pup has any hook worms which are VERY hard to treat. So you will give your dog a total of 3 treatments for 3 days each so when you order you need to order 3 boxes according to the pups weight. I am assuming the pup is small so it won't cost more then $4.99 a box.

As long as you use a broad spectrum wormer which both i suggested are you will get the worms and the pup will be fine with both of the types of wormers I suggested. I use these wormers on my own pups and would never put any of them in any harm. I worm all my pups when they are young for several weeks and also do fecal exams at the vets before they go to their new homes which happen to be clear do to my excellent worming program!

Yup they will some still alive. I hope you got the wormer from your vet! If you didn't then it may not be working as well.

You need to bring your pup into the vets and have it's stool checked and the vet will give you the right wormer to get ride of all the worms your pup has. Never use OTC wormers on small pups. They usually dont work and can make a pup very sick too.

Did you get a quality wormer from your Vet or one from the pet supply store? If not from your Vet then please, take your pup to the Vet and let the Vet treat him. You have no way to diagnose what all types of worms he may have so while you may get rid of some of the worms, you may not get rid of all and if his health becomes too compromised due to worm infestation, he honestly could die.

Incidentally, not all puppies are born with worms. Only people that breed but don't do all the preventative health care on the adults before the breeding will deliver pups with worms. I haven't had a puppy with worms since 1975.

even if you didn't give him the medicine, if the pup has enough worms in him, they will still come out of the stool. take him to the vet and get him dewormed - fortunately, deworming is very simple and cheap. When you bring him in bring in a stool sample too - at my vet to check the stool is $20, it varies from vet to vet there are also low cost clinics if money is an issue. You should get rid of the worms asap for your pup, they are taking the much needed nutrients from his body. Make sure your pup doesn't eat his own feces too.

Furthermore not all pups are born with them, Our mother dog is kept healthy and free of parasites, every litter that we have had from her has never had any parasites, no worms, no fleas, it really is up to the breeders to take care of their dogs.

Make sure you take your puppy to the vet. Don't try to medicate him on yourself. He might have other kind of worm different from what the wormer you bought is going to treat him for. There are many types of worm, roundworm, hookworm, tape worm, heartworm, etc. Make sure you take him right away because worms can kill your dog if not treated. Make sure also to follow through all the treatment the vet recommends. If he says "give his medication for 3 weeks", don't interrupt at 1 or 2 weeks. Also flea treatment is important (Frontline Plus).

If you stopped the medicine, they'd probably still be there...and might even be worse, as the medicine could be the kind that works gradually.

If nothing changes within a week or so, I would take the puppy to the vet and see if they might be able to give you something a little stronger instead of the store-bought stuff.

He particularly can! this is in no way clever to divulge your puppy to different canines until he has finished his vaccinations. And all domestic canines have worms, so do no longer enable him close to the different puppy until they have the two been wormed and vaccinated.

yes the worms will still come out...it probably works. did you get it from a vet or did you just go out and buy it yourself?

go to a vets and get them to recommend you a better brand...even though its more pricey, or a different one. maybe your dog isn't reacting to some of the ingredients in there or whatever.

don't stop giving him the medicine though till you go back to the vetes...the worms can build up and create serious health risks.

What you have is tapeworm that dogs get from eating fleas. You need to take the dog to the vet and get the appropriate meds for tapeworm. Also do some flea control.
