I know it is a silly question... NO i don't want to feed it to him. I just want him to grow up around kitty so He is not trying to chase them later.

Should I get a kitten or an older cat? Either way it will be fixed and come from a shelter.

Oh and he is 3 months old...

And just a side note Why doesn't my 360 Pic show up for my avatar i switched the settings?? weird. maybe it just takes a while.

a kitten and for the 1st couple days keep them seperated the kitten will get used to the smell of the other animal through the door so that the intitial meet wont be so tensiuse. ask the shelter if the kitten plays well with others because if it cant get along with other cats it wont get along with the dog. as long as they grow up together they will get along. for the first weeks of interactions kep the visits supervised until it is evident that they are ok with eachother.

Yea if you like cats why not?

I am planning to do the same when i get a new dog. (The one I have now would never accept a cat in our house, so it would have to be after her...)

They get a unique connection, and most likely be best friends forever!

Getting a kitten would be nice. But remember all the hard work that comes with it. Especially is you are more of a dog person, and don't want a cat to ruin your furniture.

If you get an older cat, I would go to SPCA and get one that it already used to dogs. I am sure they would let you bring your dog there to see how they connect.

My friend has a great dane mix, and two cats. And seeing them together really makes you want a dog and a cat ;o)

Good luck!

(and my 360 Pic does not show up either... don't know why... Good question! lol)

Well it would be best to get a kitten. Not only would you want the great Dane to get used to the cat, but you also want the cat to get used to the dog.

You don't want to take an older cat that probably doesn't like dog's and stick it with that puppy. Then have the cat always scratch the puppy. Then the dog will always associate the cat with pain, and wont like the cat.

Start with a kitten, but be careful. The dog can play with the cat and still accidentally kill it.

get a kitten if your dog is loving, and get some gate and some place for the cat to go that your great dane will respect as the cat's area. other than that, i dont know what to say. is your great dane loving or not towards you? if you think your great dane is a little aggressive, you can try to get an older cat that is a little agressive back...to stop the dog from eating it.

A kitten. Then they can grow up together.

But must be supervised at all times just in case the Great Dane decides it's hungry...

And getting a kitten would also help the kitten get use too dogs. :)

My Great Dane doesn't chase cats, neither the birds who drop by his food bowl from time to time. He may bark at them if they are rummaging around outside, but he would do that to certain kids also. He may bark every now and then, but he may also bark at other dogs too. I don't think it matters, as long as they are trained not to bark at other animals and corrected when they do such.

I think how you introduce him to the animal is what's important. You may buy a cat, and he may not like the cat, and may be crazy about the cat at your grandmothers.

if the dog is young getting him a kitten is a great idea just make sure at first he is taught to be very nice to his kitty. ziggys kitty sleep on him like he is her giant pillow!

oh man when i read your question i was like "oh my hell no way!!!!" lol good to know you don't want to get him a kitty for a snack :)

if you want him to like cats then i would say yes but you will have to watch them constantly to be sure the kitty doesn't become dinner and to make sure he doesn't hurt the kitty on accident.
