Pit Bulls have a bad rap because:
1. There are irresponsible breeders and owners.
2. Media coverage.
A pit bull is not meant for the inexperienced owner, and unfortunately, the breed is often bought to make the owner look "tough" or to intimidate, unfortunately leading to an untrained dog, and therefore a dangerous dog.
Do you think if a beagle attacked someone it would get as much media attention as a pitbull would?
I've actually met more lovable pitbulls than I have "mean" or "dangerous" pitbulls.

I don't personally have experience with Pit Bulls but I think it's all in the way a dog is raised whether it be a Pit Bull or another breed. I would say that the biggest problems are:
1. Lack of training
2. Inappropriate care and socialization
3. Stupid people breeding for fighting

I agree with you. Mine was easy to train in most ways and challenging in other ways, but she is such a great dog and good with children, socialized to people and other animals as well. The bad rep is what is touted, but they have great reps as hero dogs as well. I just wish the media would give equal time to the many heroes amongst the breed!
Mines a hero! She protected my spouse from a mugging when out for a night time walk. Before then and after then, she has been very friendly with people.
I love 'em! I have three, they are so not the dangerous killers that the media makes them out to be. I wish that more people would look beyond the lies of the media and adopt an adoptable Pit or Staffie at their local shelter, and not be scared of him or her just because of the breed.

I have a pitbull x and shes is so beautiful.... Its not fair they get a bad rep... Cause im sure Labs & Golden Ret bite people just as much as these guys do - however no one ever thinks a "nice" dog would bite them!
Also - ***.holes like Michael Vick give them bad names to.. Im glad hes in jail. i think he should stay there for life!
I love my pitbull cross.... Shes my girl!!

Agree w/ debralee. Also reason for bad rap is that pitbulls do more damage when they do happen to attack. If a beagle attacks you, worst case scenario might be stitches & antibiotics. If pit attacks you, there's a good chance of hospitalization or death. I've met way way way more little dogs who are aggressive though. Just don't hear about it, because they don't do enough damage to be newsworthy.

Best dog ever. I swear!
The media gives out so much crap! The stuff that other people want to hear!
You'll never hear a, "Pit Bull gives kisses to 3 year old girl!" story. You know, the ones that people NEED to hear.

As an ACO and owner, they are, IMHO, the best dogs I've owned and met!! I've met some nasty ones, too.. but at least they ome right out with the nastiness.. none of that snapping and sneak-attacks!!
I've also met many who, on the brink of death, beaten and starved, are still wagging their tail s and licking the faces of their rescuers!
