For anyone who is in the Chicagoland area, FOX news at 9 tonight is having a story on the prescence of lead in pet toys.

From the preview, I gathered that they will show what you can do to make sure your pet's toys are safe, and have an interview with a vet regarding the issue. Thought I'd give you a heads up!

Oh yeah - and since I have to ask a question... what do you do to make sure your dog's toys are safe?

Thanks for the heads up on the news show.

LOL,since you had to ask a question,I guess I have to answer it.

I check them carefully for pieces that might be chewed off, wash most of them in a real light bleach concentrate to remove any unwanted chemicals and germs from the production process and then rinse well to remove any bleach.

Actually, I have 4 of those for my small dogs. There is nothing to swallow and they are soft terry cloth on the outside and really cushy. So what if it's labeled as a dog toy? It's the exact same thing that a baby toy would be made out of at a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the info! To make sure my dogs stay safe, I always supervise them when they are playing with their toys, I usually buy the same kind or brand of toys that haven't ever given them trouble, I make sure they don't eat the toy or parts of the toy, and when I buy a toy, I make sure it's all intact-no holes or anything.

Most of my dog's toys are limited to stuffed animals from garage sales, strips of knotted fleece, soda bottles and beef femurs (whole). The dogs seem to limit chewing to the femurs.. so I don't worry much other than to try to make sure Lou doesn't steal a soda bottle that still has cap, ring and label on it.

I buy my toys and treats from a wonderful store www.caninekids.com she has gone through so much with her dogs and now uses that to educate people who shop there. She only sells treats she makes, processed bones that are made in WI and makes many toys herself.

lol thanx for that.

I make sure, if they are plush toys, there are no holes in them and no bits that can choke my pup (like bottons and plastic eyes)

if its a toy, such as the kong, i would check if there are any boken bits of rubber hanging off.

i also make sure that the whole house is "PUPPY PROOFED"

Yes I do! I get very few toys for my dogs so I stick to one or 2 companies to get what toys I give them. I have been dealing with these 2 companies for years so I do trust them.

I only buy my dog toys made out of textiles. It takes him about 5 minutes to shred the toys, during which time he is supervised, then the stuffing goes in the trash.

think the best thing to do would be to check with ur vet. my vet always advices me wat to buy and wat not. usually i jus buy toys from the vet itself. check out my vet who also sells lots of toys:
