I have a king charles spaniel puppy and i'm trying to teach her her name and for her to respond and come for when we take her out for walks and at the moment she just won't listen and ignores me. Her name is Katie and when ever i call it she just sits looking up at me or ignores me. Does anyone know a good way of teaching her and getting her to respond. Please help! Thanks.

'Katie' should become an attention command NOT just a name. If you use it too often it just becomes a part of the background noise of every day life to your dog

It should be a case of "Katie"........ "Yes Mum. What do you want?" and then you give your command.

So. You never use the name without following it with a command!

Say her name, and when she looks praise her and give her a treat. Her name should always be with something possitive.

For teaching come get a long line. They sell tham at pet stores. Mine is 30 feet and it's perfect. Take her outside and attach the line to her collar. HAve lots of treats in your pocket. tell her "come". If you can lure her in with a treat do that, other wise grab the line about a foot away from her collar and give a little tug, say come, and pull her to you were.

This is just so she learns what come means. If she knows what come means, and is over 6 months, then you can start proofing her.( making sure she'll come everytime in distractions) I recomend a prong( also called pinch) collar. They look evil, but are very humane. The prongs don't poke into the skin, but when you pull on the tab( an about 1 foot leash that is always attached to the collar) the prongs come together and pinch the neck like a mother or Alpha dog( you) would give it a correctional nip.

If she knows come then take her out with her long line on and let her run around. Tell her "come" in a clear voice. If she comes reward her and give her a treat or just praise and pet her a lot. If she doesn't come the first time you say. Say "no no no" all the way up to her, give a quick pull and release on her collar like you would with the tab(1 foot leash) on, repeat "come"( after the correction) and pull her to where you were( hands still about a foot away from her collar.

Your dog will learn that you are the leader of the pack and he will want to please you and listen without being bribed. If you rely on bribind then as soon as something more tempting( a bunny) comes a long he'll think. Nah , don't want a treat right now, I want a bunny! and off he goes.

The easiest way to teach a puppy their name is to make learning fun. Trainers call this “positive reinforcement”. We take any situation, and turn it into a fun and interesting time. First, find a puppy appropriate treat. Something small perhaps even chewy, and easy to administer during the “training sessions”. Now whenever you call her name, and she looks at you; you should get very excited (i.e.: jump around, smile broadly, tell her what a wonderful and good dog she is in a very high and excited voice) and give her the treat. This is called capturing. Dogs attention spans are very short, so only do this for 5-10 min sessions throughout the day. Try to keep treats handy, keep a Ziploc baggy of them in nearby places, so you can randomly practice teaching her her name. You will be amazed at how fast, easy, and even fun it is to teach your puppy anything by using these methods. We always want to implement the idea that learning is fun, that way in the long run it will be easier for both of you to do everything you have always wanted to do! Just make things fun, and she will follow.

Most things above are great - if you do the treat method, start weaning from it as soon as you think she's caught on. Don't go cold turkey - just start breaking the habit.

Some advice that may startle you, and is not necessarily applicable in this situation...blatant disobedience can often be remedied with a nip on the dogs ear. Bleh, right? You'd be surprised at how quickly it works. Not hard enough to bleed, and though it's hard to hear - might make her squeak or yip a little. She may play coward at first afterwards, but that's because she knows she's in trouble.

This method has been used by female dogs on pups for generations. Fail-safe!

Please don't tap a dog's nose or even lightly blow on it - dogs are HUNDREDs of times more sensitive there than we are. Instead, a light tap on the MUZZLE (not the nose TIP), will get your point across the same way.

Congrats on the new addition - and good luck!

Your Dogs Name

Say your dog's name in an upbeat, happy tone of voice. If he so much as twitches an ear in your direction then tell him what a GOOD BOY he is, give him a little loving and toss him a treat or play a quick game with him. Make a bit of a fuss about it.

Say his name again a minute or so later and again praise him and make a fuss over him and give him a little treat or other reward as soon as he directs his attention toward you.

Do this several times throughout the day for several days. It shouldn't take long at all for him to immediately direct his attention to you as soon as you say his name. (He will probably come to you as well.)

you can find other tricks here. Good luck and have fun!

get a clicker, and a lot of treats, every time he (or she) does something good, click the clicker and give them a treat, they will learn to associate the click with a good thing, and always praise them too, make lots of fuss, after a few weeks phase the treats out slowly, only give them a treat half the time, but always click the clicker, eventually you will just be able to click the clicker, and they will see it as a reward,

Put her on a long line, take plenty of tasty treats, show her one and call her to you, when she comes give her the treat and praise her. Bribery is they key!

Is she deaf? or just stubborn? If she isnt deaf, try giving her treats when you call her name...she should get it, but if she is deaf, you are going to have to teach her hand signals...
