Having a convo w/ some people this morning.

According to one person in the group,
- if you leave your dog alone for more than 4 hours every day, you're neglecting it
- if you don't walk your dog every day, you're neglecting it
(EVEN if the dog gets some other form of exercise)
- if you use any type of training tool (such as a prong collar), it's abuse
- if you crop/dock, it's abuse
- if your dog lives in the backyard (and still gets enough exercise, attention, proper vet care etc), it's abuse and neglect

I am not trying to make this sound like a rant, just curious to hear what YOUR definition of abuse/neglect is.........

To me, abuse means withholding water, food, shelter and/or medical care, and/or active mistreatment whether physical or mental.

A dogs natural habitat is outdoors; indoor living is an adaptation; sleeping outside separated from the rest of the family is also an adaptation, but dogs are pretty darn adaptable.

Neglect means withholding companionship.

It's true, a dog who gets plenty exercise and training, as well as affection, can fulfill its full canine potential, but IMHO, lack of those factors does not constitute neglect.

Like many tools (firearms for example), Any training tool can be misused in an abusive manner. Use of a prong collar on a human would be abuse, but then humans don't have a big strong neck covered in thick hide and fur. Think about it -- a dog's neck his held horizontally with his head at the end of it -- think how strong it has to be for that to happen. Try it yourself, you'll see what I mean.

The person you mentioned, sounds like he/she is having trouble distinguishing between humans and canines.

Is the person who said all that a supporter of HSUS or PETA? Because with their 'ideas' of neglect, it seems like it.

All of what that one person said-is not neglect/abuse to me.

Neglect is if the animal does not receive food, water or have a proper shelter and also does not get proper medical care.

Abuse is if the dog is physically harmed for not apparent reason, over and over again. Other answerers have already mentioned good examples of abuse.

None of that even comes close.

Neglect: Lack of proper exercise and training. Not attending to food shelter and health needs

Abuse: Physical harm out of malice, annoyance or simply because you CAN. Ie setting a dog on fire just because its a stray. Hanging and SHOOTING your dogs because you're too cheap to pay for boarding. Putting a kitten into an oven and turning it on because you're mad at the owner. < All of these are true stories

None of those above are Neglect or abuse .

Neglect to me is failing to provide a dog with food shelter and water .

Failing to provide vet care for a sick dying or injured dog is Abuse /Neglect.

Starving your dog to the point of him dying ,Beating your dog ,causing any injury to your dog,,allowing others to hurt your dog or beat your dog is cruelty .

If you beat your dog, not feed it or water it, if you let it live in its own feces or urine, if you forget that he/she even exists then I think that's abuse and neglect. People don't alway have time to spend with their animals but as long as all of their needs and hygiene are being kept then that's a responsible pet owner in my opinion.

that's a distinctly unusual undertaking to be petrified of.. what do they think of they are going to do? easily nonetheless, different than in situations of abuse/overlook, I in basic terms be attentive to a million man or woman who had a thoroughly closed adoption. so some distance as i be attentive to, this replace into no longer the call of the APs. They supported their son whilst he became 18 and wanted to seek. additionally, whilst their son replace into approximately 9 or 10 the adoptive mothers youthful sister desperate to undertake. They cautioned to her that she do an open adoption. That adoption has been between the main valuable open adoptions i'm accustomed to. I fairly have heard of adoptive mom and dad being "afraid" of organic and organic mom and dad, besides the shown fact that it replace into continuously extra of the "petrified of what that they had do to the youngster" difficulty whilst the youngster got here from an abusive or neglectful difficulty. i think of it may be perplexing for any determine to no longer be somewhat apprehensive (or a minimum of incredibly indignant with) somebody who had harm their toddler. lacking a particular reason (like approximately or overlook), i do no longer think of it may be appropriate for an adoptive determine who replace into "afraid" of a start determine to undertake. inspite of each little thing, the youngster they like to undertake could have come from that man or woman's physique - and carry that man or woman's genetic code. mom and dad who divorce are warned consistently approximately "undesirable speaking" the different determine by way of fact it fairly can do extreme harm to the youngster. that is even the case if the youngster does not be attentive to the determine in question. My little brother, one time, called my son's father an a**hollow whilst he did no longer think of my son replace into listening - and it fairly upset my 4-365 days-previous even nonetheless he's in basic terms considered his father as quickly as by way of fact he replace into old adequate to undergo in concepts. the same undertaking could be real, I think of, for adoptive little ones. in the event that they lived in homes the place their organic and organic determine replace into taken care of as a monster, they could replace into very scarred. Even in situations of abuse/overlook, that's in many situations appropriate to attempt to no longer enable emotions of concern or anger coach whilst coping with the youngster.
