our 7 month old pointer devoured a newly opened tub of margarine the other night. she was sick a few times, but seems fine generally, but over the last 24 hours she has developed quite a lot of gas which is abnormal for her. is there anything possibly wrong with her after eating so much fatty product? she hasn't gone off her food or water which i a good sign i guess, but if any one can help that would be great thanks

I'm with Genna, my dog did that as well. She won't do it again. She did vomit several times and she did have gas and the runs but she was and is still fine. That was 11 years ago!!

If anything changes or she stops eating I would consult your vet, otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

She should be fine in a day or two after the margarine has passed through her system. And the gas is due to the large amt of oil she consumed. Her stool may be loose for a day or two also but this is normal after eating something with so much oil in it.

What you need is a list of foods that you can't eat. Anything fried, full of sugar and with a high fat content should be avoided. That means that you should stay away from anything at restraunt that are fried or breaded and you should increase you intake of foods that are veggies, fruit, lean meat and whole grain breads. Avoid alcoholic beverages which breakdown into sugar and sweets and breads which also break down into sugar. Take fish oil tablets 500 to 1000 mg a day this will also help reduce the cholesterol.

Your only problem will be a bit of diarrhea for a while - she should be fine, the gas would be the same as how your stomach would react to that much margarine!

If shes stop being sick and her appetite is fine, all should be ok. The gas i`m afraid is possibly one of the results, she may have the runs too. I know that the black charcoal dog biscuits are supposed to be good for getting rid of indigestion problems, but only give them as you would normal treats.

In an otherwise healthy young dog with no history of pancreatitis- she should be fine. Gas, vomiting & diarrhea are common. If you see any signs that she's not herself in the next day or two, you can call your vet. But she should be ok.

Aw my dog ate a tub of butter once, he had gotten big enough to jump on the counter and get at it. He was fine but that isn't an experience he is likely to repeat.

I would call the vet and double check with them...maybe there is a risk of causing damage to internal organs with this much fat?

The call is free and they will tell you whether or not you need to worry over anything.

if she threw up, she probably threw up the margarine, but be prepared for the runs...invest in a can of pumpkin and give her a tablespoon - it will firm up loose stool if she has them.
