There isn't much that can't be a problem when getting a dog. Labs need tons of exercise. Labs need things to keep them mentally stimulated and need 'jobs' so they dont' get destructive. Puppies chew, they sometimes have accidents with potty training (if they are potty trained at all). They shed and leave hair all over everything. Many will have an instinct to swim and want to run and jump in the water. Many have a high drive for prey and hunting and you could have troubles with it wanting to get ahold of your bird. It could break things in the house. It can eat shoes.

If you don't train your dog properly and take it to obedience classes it could decide to be the alpha and want ot make the rules. None of which you will like. If not fixed (spayed or neutered) it can spray urine in the house to mark it's territory.

Living in a flat means you'll have to find a place to truly exercise your dog. At least a half hour a day minimum! Twice a day would be best. Dogs can get to barking when not stimulated and exercised enough, as well as destructive.

Dogs are daily work. If you don't have at least an hour a day to give to a dog, probably not worth getting one. Parrots need daily attention as well, at least an hour as well or they get weird. The less attention they get, the more problematic they will become. If your bird isn't used to being locked up often, this could be a big problem. You are never safe with two types of animals in the house. A dog can decide to eat a bird... it happens often enough.

Negative things that dogs do:

1-Chewing everything in sight due to boredom and lack of exercise.

2-Defecating and Urinating all over the house

3-Barking, Wining, Crying, all night long

4-Destroying the house from lack of exercise and mental stimulation (for example: tearing apart the couch, ripping the door of the hinges)

5-Becoming dog or people aggressive from lack of training and socialization

6-Becoming pregnant because they haven't been spayed. (in the case of a male, knocking up the neighbors beagle cause he smelt her in heat)

7-A medical complication resulting in a $5000+ vet bill.

8- Allergies, Skin and Fur irritations

9- Gum disease, cavities, bad breath and rotting teeth (which would also result in a large medical bill) from not brushing the dogs teeth.

10- Shedding hair all over the house.

11- The dog could hunt and kill smaller animals (such as birds, cats, squirrels, smaller dogs).

12- The dog might attempt to be the alpha or pack leader and dominate you all the time. This would also result in the dog not listening to you or doing anything you ask.

Etc.....

Dogs are fantastic and I can't wait to have one or two of my own, but they aren't to be taken lightly. They need to be well taken care of and well trained and they need a loving caring owner to provide them with the best home possible.

Hope this helps

Good luck with your new puppy

Get a crate, study a thank you to apply it. Take a domestic dog preschool type and instruct your dogs to appreciate you as his chief. Then proceed training at domicile and with a training and obedience type two times a month. save issues out of puppys attain, or save domestic dog crated once you won't be in a position to supervise. the issue isn't the domestic dog, the issue is which you're no longer training your domestic dog wisely. purchase or inspect from the library the e book "NO undesirable canines" and follow it.

Sign up for classes.. If you aren't a natural trainer, then you'll want help .. If the dog is already 6 mos old, and someone is looking to get rid of him, then it's likel he has no training at all..

labs are very active, hyper, hunting/retreaving dogs. check out dogbreedinfo.com and try and find a local dog club or somthing like that that you can get help from. a friend I work with has a black lab, and that dog makes my dogs hyperness look like my dog is standing still..(I have a germen shephard.)
