Question:
How can I help my dog lose weight?

My dog needs surgery, but she must lose wieght first. She is walked reguarly and is not fed scraps. Her food was cut down by two thirds (scraps and excess dog food). For a while this was working, but she stoped losing weight. We changed her food (since she ran out) and suspect that is it. She has about four more months to lose the wieght. Any sugestions?

First of all remember that research has shown that, in general, a healthy dog can abstain from food for five days before any noticeable health effects occur. They generally don't HAVE to eat every day. (Very small breeds are an exception...but unless there's really some medical problem present, missing a day of eating isn't a major catastrophe.) Always be sure fresh water is available. So start out by feeding a very high quality, complete and balanced dog food. Look on the ingredients list...MEAT should be the first item listed, not corn. You may also want to supplement with a vitamin/mineral/fatty acid product. PetFoodDirect.com has some excellent products... search for SUPPLEMENTS. Be careful about over supplementing, too!.

Now record an accurate pre-diet weight. Reduce by one-third your pet’s total daily ration previously given. Include in this total all treats, snacks, or left-overs if you insist on continuing to provide these. Reweigh the pet in 2 weeks. (Remember if the pet begs for food, that's a good sign! But don’t give in. Read again if you have to about Type II)

If you find upon weighing your pet after two weeks that it has lost even a little weight, you’re on the right track; keep up this schedule! If no weight loss is evident, again reduce by one-third the amount being fed. Weigh the pet again in two weeks. Depending upon the results either keep feeding this amount or reduce again by one-third the total amount being fed. If you persist a good outcome is certain. Many veterinarians believe you should not feed the "Reduced Calorie" or "Lite Diets" or "Senior Diets"! These diets have very restricted fat levels to reduce the calories but by necessity have increased the carbohydrate percentages. This increased carbohydrate stimulates additional Insulin secretion which tells the body to store unused calories as fat! There are a multitude of overweight dogs that have actually gained weight on those "Reduced Calorie" weight loss diets. Your dog needs a meat-based diet, high in protein (which isn't stored as fat) and fat and low in carbohydrate. Now... YOU have to adjust the quantity being fed to achieve a state where the dog takes in fewer total calories than it is using for the day's energy requirements. Simple!

It is also quite important to get everyone’s cooperation in restricting the pet’s intake. There is usually someone in the household who feels sorry for the dieting pet and surreptitiously provides "just a little" something extra. More helpful would it be for the person to take the pet for a walk or a run to burn off a few calories.

Keep in mind most overweight pets have a slow metabolism. They simply don’t burn off those calories very fast and in fact don’t generally have "eager eater" appetites. Because of this slow metabolism, though, they don’t require very much; so "just a little extra" will make a big difference over a period of time.

Remember...high quality, meat-based food, control the amount fed, provide more exercise, and be persistent. Help your pet live a longer, leaner and more enjoyable life. Many types of dermatological problems are avoided if the dog or cat is consuming an optimum diet. In some cases, adding a supplement such as DermCaps, a popular Omega Fatty Acid supplement with a number of beneficial ingredients, is the key factor in avoiding repeated episodes of Hot Spots and other skin afflictions. If your dog or cat seems to lack good coat and skin health, consider upgrading the diet to a meat-based ingredient formula and adding a supplement such as DermCaps.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

IM surpized your dog lost any weight, most dogs dont they build muscle, instead of walking her try and make her run, take her to the park play feach make your dog tired but dont exzost her...dogs are like humans so the best way to help her lose the weight she needs to is to keep her heart rate up, dont let her sleep most of the day...get a puppy so she will have someone else to play with...

Believe it or not, sometimes, dogs find other sources of food. Eating another animals foods, trash, feces etc. I would start there and make sure no other human is feeding your dog either. Lessing protions, and increased exercise correct, so from here, all you can do is monitor and continue forward.

There is a weight loss drug approved for dogs, also hill's science diet makes formulas called R/D (reduced diet & weight diet) W/D. Check into those for further assistance.

Good Luck...don't give up.

Well, make sure she is eating enough, or she will stop losing the weight because her body will retain everything. Go for a jog or on roller blades and have her run beside you on a leash regularly. Keep up her food intake, though, because she'll need to extra energy for the exercise. Her metabolism will increase, so the food will not prevent her from losing weight. 4 months is a good amount of time for her to lose it slowly, so don't shoot for immediate results :)

You need to take her into the vet and be checked. Dogs can get anything a human can get. They can get diabetes that would cause weight gain. They could have kidney stones that can cause this. How is her teeth? You need to get her in. They also make special foods geared for overweight dogs. They vet can help you. They can check her and make sure there is nothing physically wrong.

Not sure what sort of dog you have..but I know putting your dog on a diet is no fun. My dogs are long hair doxies and my vet read me the "riot act" about being very strict on mine :(

(My husband was the real culprit in our house) She gave me strict instructions to cut their dog food (Low Cal Beneful) to 1/2 cup a day (looks like NOTHING) and that is IT! Sure enough they got down to their normal weight and maintain it...they are allowed raw carrots, green beans and other raw veggies for snacks...at first they turned their noses up at them but now...they love them One of my girls was a good bit overweight (18 pounds) and I just didn't believe I was over feeding her...but now that I see the difference in her behavior and activity level..and breathing...yes, it is worth the hell of her begging and pleading. She is SO much better and younger (she is 11 years old) She is like a puppy again. I felt SO mean...but now I do know I did the right thing. My 2 year old wasn't over weight but I see she is protected from getting there...doxies of course must be extra careful because of their backs...GOOD LUCK!!

Being walked regularly is NOT exercise. Dogs need to run, swim, play catch, etc. Even three walks a day (not sure what your routine is, but it's just a guess) is a pretty lazy lifestyle for a dog.

i've heard that giving a dog green beans (the canned unsalted kind) will help them lose weight because the green beans are low calorie and makes the dog not feel as hungry

Keep with the diet and exercise.

Feed her less of the new food (less calories will lead to weight loss)

As her weight decreases then her food (calorie) intake should be decreased too. Make her portions smaller, and smaller as she gets smaller and smaller.

Same goes for people too!

Keep up the exercise, maybe go back to the other food.

And if you feed your dog lunch, I consider that an unnecessary meal, I only feed my dogs breakfast and dinner.

its not just the food that is the problem. instead of going on walks daily......try running instead. it will drop a few punds off of BOTH of you! so thats always a good benifit. another would be to play throw and fetch. thats nice arm building for you and good excercize for the dog! so it helps both of you at the same time. good luck with the surgury!
