Just got a call from one of my groomers (15 years experience) A lady(ha) had a complaint and insisted on the owner. I went and low and behold there sat this poor pitiful thing. A pure bread Labrodoodle. No lie thats what she told me. Now picture this....it was as tall as a mini Poodle, with a barrel chest, hair texture...how do I describe it...cotton candy, but straight.... then if thats not bad enough the coloring was apricot with a black muzzle and black legs, black ears and black on the back like a yorkie with lab ears.
She wanted a poodle cut. So my poor girl gave it her best shot after telling the owner it was going to look terrible and trust me folks it was plain down right butt ugly.
The lady wanted it fixed and preceeded to tell me how I was going to fix it, so after looking at it with my head ******, I picked up the shears and tried to do something with the face and legs nope that wouldn't do so she PUSHED me and grabbled my $300.00 shears and started trimming uhhh she made it worse.
I told her to please leave my shop immediatly. So she yanked up the poor dog not bothering to release the noose.--opps. I did not charge her for the grooming or pushing me.

There are times I am glad I have arthritis and can do very little grooming.

Now for my questions---- and I am really serious please tell me

What do you guys with the designer breeds want us to do? How can we make a mutt look like a poodle?
Do you think we are miracle workers?
Do you take pictures for your groomer of what you want it to look like?

Legit(just in case) How often do you groom your dogs?
Do you do it yourselves or pay one of us professionals to do it?
How much does your groomer charge for a standard breed cut?

lmao.........oh,darlin' I've seen hundreds of purebreds butchered beyond recognition.I've had to do it myself.

A nasty little shih Tzu comes to mind. His owner had broken her wrist & it was matted to the hilt. I had to ten it all over ,leaving only a tiny bit of topknot. The owner LOVED IT!!! sigh...had to repeat it over & over, including making TWO "sprouts" of topknot to be barretted=owner wanted little "devil horns"-PUKE!

& ...the schnauzer w/the clean face & poodle feet....again,that's what the owner wanted. I told her to NEVER tell who'd butchered it. She said she would, simply because I'd done as she'd asked & not given her a hard time.

Tastes sure differ,eh?

Ever keep mats to show the owners? I peeled ***11LBS*** off an OES once.

My breed is hand-stripped & *I* do it.

From one salon owner to another, that just SUCKS.

What type of cut did your girl give her? Kennel clip?

Modified Bichon clip?

I have a few doodles as customers and a boxer/poodle mix that comes in. Both my doodles have the curly/wavy coat and I cut them with a 5 blade, flag the tail, and just trim the face.

My boxer/poodle gets a clean face.

Dogs that come in with that bad fly-away frizzed coat I have my groomers cut with 3 3/4 and hand scissor the rest.

This is a hard thing. Especially when it’s a cut but don't cut. I don't take the dog back until the customer is clear as to the cut. I've had a few walk out but I would rather have that then someone walking their dog and asking who gave the dog a lousy cut.

My groomers and I have actually thought about holding a basic grooming class at our shop. Sort of like what Home Depot or Lowes does with plumbing etc...

I guess I just wrote this to tell you "I feel your pain” (LOL)

Sch, your pic of your Schnauzer/poodle is precious..so cute love it.

Legit::: you could not have pleases that idiot, she wanted a real poodle cut for a dog that it's coat would not allow, she should have realized when she bought the designer mutt, she was not gonna get the real deal..and I groom Bo, Newfoundland and Koda, Akita, but Demon he goes to my pal at Pets Mart, he has since he was 3 mos old,,,,we did not buy him to be shown, but companion, and have known her for like 16 yrs...and she is an all breed groomer, he comes home and looks like a little champion just out of the show ring....

He gets bathed every 6-8 weeks, but gets dry groomed every other Saturday and combed out......and gets coat stripped every 6 mos to keep the coat full.......when I was showing, I always groomed my show dogs my self....

Sorry, she treated you so bad, but some people have no common sense and she proved she had none at all..

good luxk, and maybe she won't come back LOL you wish

MTV must be renamed RTV : actuality television. They stopped enjoying video clips for reliable around 2003 (as quickly as I graduated intense college). yet, previous MTV is the appropriate! it quite is the place I observed the bands that would replace my existence perpetually. And, I omit Riki Rachtman on Headbanger's Ball, a hundred and twenty minutes, Kurt and Courtney Day, Video Countdowns... They was cool. Then, MTV2 got here out. They performed video clips for a mutually as, to get human beings to purchase the channel, then they positioned on an analogous fabric that ordinary MTV had! They introduced Headbanger's Ball lower back (the only subject the channel's performed precise in approximately 15 years). yet, i'm now no longer a ordinary viewer. I watch VH1 classic for all my song desires.

As a trainer I've worked with two Golden/Poodle mixes and a Lab/Poodle mix whose owners have had groomers say "We're sorry, don't come back. Your dog's coat is too difficult to work with." I would imagine its quite hard on grooming shears and clippers attempting to get through the double coat of a retriever combined with the curl/texture of a poodle.

I groom my dogs when we're going to a dog show. I do it myself but I pay the self-service dog wash about $20 per dog (they have dryers but allow me to bring in my more powerful one).

I don't know anything about standard breed cuts... neither of my breeds is trimmed.

I would recommend people take photos to show as an example whenever they get their dog's hair cut (or their own if they've had a great cut!).

You're a lot more composed than me because I would've told her if she wanted her dog to look like a poodle, she should've gotten a poodle, and thrown a few expletives in there just for good measure.

My dog is a black cocker spaniel/chow mix (accidental, not a designer dog), so he's got the dense chow coat and a long silky coat on top like a spaniel. I love his long fur (he looks like a black wookie) but poor things gets so overheated in the summer that I take him once, sometimes twice a year to be shaved. Impossible to mess that up. I get charged $65, which honestly I think is too cheap (they charge me for a spaniel) because I've tried to do the whole bathing, clipping, nails, etc at home and it was stressful for both me and him. I'd rather pay a pro to do it right and do it efficiently....not 5 hrs of pleading, wrestling, and bribery with huge mounds of hair all over the house. He looks, feels, and smells like a million bucks afterwards. In between shavings I take him for a bath and a brush which runs about $35. That too is worth it to me because his cotton candy undercoat clogs up the drain and sticks to everything when it's wet!

Yes, I spend much more time and money on my dog's hair than my own!

I think goldendoodles and labradoodles are ugly when the owners try to do anything other than a short all-over clip! They can look really cute just clipped all over with a #4 or #5 blade, face, ears, and tail too. They end up looking more like a curly-coated retriever. Or a fuzzy-coated retriever, depending on the coat type.

My mom has a poodle that is groomed by a mobile groomer. She charges $70 per session.

I had her groomer do one of my foster dogs who was a brindle colored Scottie mix, and who looked like a dirty mop, even after I washed and combed him. I asked her to trim him like a Scottie, and she did a good job. I printed out a diagram for her from the internet :o)

I trim my Westie mix myself - I used to clip horses, and its not that different. I figure if I really goof and make her look weird, we can just hide in the house :o)

I had a Papillion/ Poodle foster dog who had a terrible ugly mustache, with a papillion-y coat, so I shaved his face. I did it myself because he was very ill mannered and I figured he would eat the groomer - I had cuts all over my hands the first week I had him.

I think all you can do with a mix is make it look as presentable as possible, and as much like whatever breed it takes after as you can.

If she wanted a poodle cut she should have brought in a poodle to get cut.

Larbadoodles and any of the like would not have the hair texture to be cut like that no matter who did it.

No one could get a poodle cut with that type of hair.

Makes me glad I do not groom.

My breeds are Weimaraners and Dobermans.

No trimming needed. I do toe nails and wash them as needed.

That woman was ignorant and rude. I would of kicked her *** out like you did.

I see what you are saying, how in the world are you suppose to give a "cotton candy" textured hair dog a poodle styled cut. Its not going to happen.

So hey, It's not your fault at all the dog Did not come out the way she expected. It's the woman's fault for being ignorant.

LEGIT:; Emmet is groomed about every month and

I pay professionals to do it.

Emmet is not a pure bred, but for a bath and nails cut it comes out to about $30.00 and is well worth it. They do an excellent job, and Emmet likes to play with their bull dog pup. Haha.

Have a wonderful evening

"How can we make a mutt look like a poodle?"

You can't, unless the mutt inherited the poodle's bone structure and general look. It IS possible, but not very likely.....

My Schnauzer mix gets the Schnauzer cut and looks a like a Schnauzer to me (well, sort of - you can tell she isn't purebred, but it she doesn't look horribly different.) When her hair grows out she looks more like a poodle though.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25698377@N03/page1/

I don't bring pictures in to out groomer - i just say "schnauzer cut" and that's what they give me. I prefer that cut to letting it all grow out on her, though she's cute either way. I pay about $50 for the cut, bath, nails, teeth. We bring her in every four months or so. I felt adventurous once and tried it myself.... didn't come out right so i only clip if we want a quick and even trim (which isn't often.)

I accept that she won't look 100% Schnauzer though. ^_^

I believe the would-be legitimizers of those dogs call that a "fleece coat".

My question is, if you wanted a dog that looked like a Poodle, *why didn't you buy a Poodle???*

I had a friend that groomed -- she had a sign in her shop that said, "I'm a dog beautician...not a magician!"

Luckily, I don't have breeds that require sculpting, stripping, etc. The is Siberians and wash and wear, and the Longhaired Dachshunds are easy enough to groom at home.

Most "doodle" owners don't want them to look like a poodle. You got one of the strange ones. She should have bought a poodle.

I groom my Shih Tzu myself. I used to be a groomer. A groomer in my area would typically charge $45 for a Shih Tzu.
