Mike, I have a gampr dog. She is from Armenia. She is registered as a CO though, as they are technically the same breed, just called something different in their locale.
She was 2 when I took her in as an owner turn in to rescue.
It was a difficult to get her to work with some of my other dogs. It would have been VERY difficult had the previous owner not been so meticulous about socializing her for all of her life before I got her.
If you are not sure of your ability to be the dominant party in a situation with a dog like this, then don't do it. You also need to be aware of unstable bloodlines. Some of the bloodlines in this country are not that stable...fighting lines etc. You need to do your homework and research before you even consider that you MIGHT want one.
The reflexes of these dogs is unlike any you are likely to see in other breeds. Mine can go from being asleep to being 5 foot in the air and on the attack before you can blink you eyes. That is no exaggeration.
She has bonded nicely with us, and I trust her with my son, but let a stranger walk on to the property and you see a completely different dog. Mine is not a nut case, but you know that you need not come further, or she will remove you. She shows self control though, and is not one that will just go nuts when she sees a stranger, but she will not allow strangers to touch her, unless I put her on lead and bring her out of her pasture, and she only allows them to touch if I tell her to. This is a dog that had a professional trainer for the first 2 years of her life.
