New dog ran away, what to do?

My family just got a dog for my sister from a friend for Christmas. We had her for a week, but we did put a collar on her. But no chip. I was left alone in the house today, and just let her out in the backyard to pee ( which is fenced off), let her inside the house and just when I opened the front door to go to work, she ran away.

We live on an intersection on two busy streets, but she dodged the cars and went into the neighbors yard going another way.

I tried my best to calm her before this happened (turning on the TV before I left and giving her a chew toy), for she does not like to be left alone in the house, and whines and somewhat barks when we leave her alone

Anyways, she is gone and don't know what to do? My mom is going to try to find her, but I don't know how. Should I call the pound or animal shelter?

I never had a dog b4 and only have a cat, and whenever she tries to escape out the door I pushed her away, but the dog is too large and agile to do that.

Yes, phone the Humane Society and Animal Control and leave a description of her. Also phone nearby vets in case someone takes her there.

Put online Lost ads (Kijiji, Craigslist). You can also make up flyers to distribute--hopefully you have a photo of her to use.

Hopefully you'll get her back soon. Next time be more careful going out the door, even if you have to sneak through backwards, until the dog is more comfortable being left.

Good luck finding her.

Once you get her back how long will she be home alone? does she have a doggie door to use while your

gone. It is not fair to leave a puppies alone too many hours. As you found out dogs are much more work

and worry than a indoor cat with a litter box. Is your home dog proofed. Same as baby proof.

Get down on the floor and look at it from a dogs view. When bored they will chew up everything.

I hope you dog comes home soon.

Contact the local dog pound/shelter so if she's picked up they know someone is looking for her...also contact local vets offices about her, so if someone brings her in to have her checked for a chip, they'll know someone is looking for an unchipped dog matching her description...

Put up flyers around the area with her picture and a contact number...

Check on Facebook and see if there are any Lost Pet pages for your area..share her photo and contact info with every local rescue's Fb page, pet stores, vets, etc...ask friends to share her photo so it gets as much exposure in your area as possible...

Drive/walk the area where she ran away, and carry some good dog treats with you to tempt her if you find her...knock on doors and peek in backyards to make sure someone didn't take her in to keep her safe...

Best wishes that she makes it home soon!!!

Call the vets, animal shelters and anywhere else where she may have been handed in, ask your neighbours if they have seen her around
