Without realising I was using a laser pointer to play with my dog and then saw it was very bad for them. After we finished we immediately started giving him treats and threw balls to try and get him focused on the ball. He still looks around for the laser pointer. We only played with him with it for 5 mins. Would he forget about it in a few weeks or whatever or are there any serious long term affects that we should be worried about.

No way anyone can answer that not knowing your individual dog, as for "any serious long term affects" contact your vet for advice, phone calls are free in most areas, we're not vets.

I think that he would forget about it.

I think you'll be okay, since you only did it once for 5 minutes. He'll forget. Good that you discovered how bad lasers pointers can be for before it became a "thing."

Hopefully you didn't point the laser pointer in the dog's eyes as were you to have done so, your dog may go blind because a laser pointer permanently damages the eye. Don't ever do this again to your dog. Don't let the dog see the laser pointer so it'll forget about it.
