Okay i have a dog that is getting older and we would like to save his sperm for a breeding but we want to wait a few years before using it, we have talked about neutering our dog after we collect the semen, this dog was owned by my mom who passed away she used to show him and he is a finished champion but has only be used for breeding once before about 4 years ago,

my question is can you keep the semen in a vial at home and freeze it with out having to send it overnight to a Canine sperm bank? we would like to have it here not in another building

we already know we can get a ICSB and collect the semen at home and then send it overnight to the canine sperm bank but we don't want to ship it anywhere that is my question can you or can you not pt it in a freezer to store it?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Requires frozen NITROGEN temps!!! *&* a buffering agent.

NOT just collection & some cheapazz 'frig!

No, collecting and freezing semen is very precise. It has to be collected in a warmed tube, and then flash frozen and kept at a specific temperature. Changes in temperature, such as a home freezer, and collection in the tube at wrong temperature, just won't work to keep the sperm viable.

Don't the sperm banks store the straws in liquid nitrogen tanks? They keep the sperm a lot colder than our home freezers; I think it's below -150C as compared to -20C for a good sub-zero freezer. Do you have a generator in case the power goes out?

You can probably do it, but when you go to register the litter with the AKC, you are going to run into a problem. The dog that I now have was bred with collected semen which was shipped from the stud's kennel and surgically implanted into the female. In order to register the litter, the AKC required certification letters from the vet who collected the semen from the stud and from the vet that did the implant so that they knew which dog the semen was collected from and which female it was implanted in. Otherwise anyone could say that they used a particular male and female even if they did not.

tk is correct it MUST be stored in liquid nitrogen (with NO room for thawing) and must be brought down to that temp in a very precise manner (and thawed via exact procedure)-or it will be killed, not stored

you CAN get your own liquid nitrogen freezer, many dairy farmers (who may be breeding 100 animals all with frozen semen) have one but it'll cost you close to $1,000 plus the nitrogen delivery's PS dairymen don't freeze there own semen - they get it frozen or hire custom freezing

PS a collection/ freezing will cost around $500 (in my area) and an older male may need 2 or more collections for ONE frozen semen breeding!

I dont think a home freezer will store at the proper temp, or remain at a consistent temperature to store sperm.

You can try it, but you'd be wasting your time and money.

I think you have to have it done at a center to maintain the integrity of the sperm and of the donor, People could claim the sperm came from any dog.

Freezing it at home might work but a sperm bank would have back up systems to make sure the sperm does not thaw.
