Yes I know....

Wanted to get other people's opinions on this

I just found out that I will be hosting Christmas this year....with self, my kid, my best friend who's traveling from Toronto...with her two kids, hubby...my two parents.....MURPHY and her 5 mo old lab puppy

For the ones who dont know...my chow mix is a ...well....an ASSSSSSS on his good days. He gets along with SOME female dogs, males not so much. Seeing as how this lab pup is about Murph's size by now....and is male...and is not neutered at this time....what would be the best option for my two days of pure hell...I mean pure christmas pleasure?

I was thinking back deck...close it off...and put both of them there .... with me holding a big asssss stick just in case Murph goes for him......as in a way to introduce them.

Just an FYI...I do have a crate and a spare bedroom....I would like NOT to use it for the whole two days of separating two dogs though...but will if necessary.

Thanks so much!

Hmm, you may just get away with this one, as the pup is on the cusp of coming into his traits and beginning to mature mentally at five months, which is when the testosterone begins to fly sparking off trouble between males, if same sex aggression is part of the genetic makeup of one or both dogs.

If Murphy is tolerant of puppy behavior and the Labrador still on the right side of becoming a “teen”, perhaps have them first meet off the property and go for a walk to take the measure of each other and then bring them inside, with the puppy still on a lead and a watchful eye of Murphy’s body language for telltale signs of aggression or he is going to throw his weight around.

Supervised if all goes well, and if not one out and the other in a crate or behind a locked door, taking it in turns to be with the humans.

Difficult but doable if Murphy is intolerant of the pup, but the kind of “fun” you could do without over Christmas.

I would personally have the two dogs meet while they are on short leashes and held by strong people. That way, you can control the speed at which they approach each other - and you'll want to do it slowly - and watch the body language. The pup also can't overwhelm your dog that way. If something goes wrong, or looks like it will, you can just pull out of there.

Good luck. I feel your pain, as over Thanksgiving family came up that we haven't seen in awhile and brought along their two Goldens. It went fine, their dogs are well trained and mine aren't dog aggressive, but my Aussie mix is much, much better with other dogs OFF her turf than ON and grumbled a bit about it with no shortage of stinkeye.

Ask the visitors not to bring their dog along as yours doesn't get along with other dogs. If they are unable to find a dog sitter or board their dog, tell them to bring a crate. Keep the dogs separate. Rotate crate & outside time.

For two days, since your dog is dog-aggressive, I would just keep them apart.

If you really don't want to do that.....I introduce new dogs by taking them for a walk together.

Parallel walking (rather than a face to face introduction) allows dogs to check each other out without being confrontational.

I have had foster dogs who were snapping and snarling at my dogs at the beginning of the walk, but by the end of a half hour walk everyone was fine.

With that suggested approximately 5 years in the past i began or greater advantageous yet observed the sunshine and learnt approximately constructive reinforcement style coaching and that i realize it fairly works. i attempt to continually arise with a greater advantageous way a favorable way and for the main area i could evaluate myself a favorable canine coach now. i'm not ideal yet i understand being constructive works one hundred% greater advantageous. I desire i ought to coach you I desire you ought to confirm what I actual have completed with canine employing constructive tactics in case you ought to i actual think of you may start up believing additionally. seem I see canine that have themes each and all of the time and the reason those canine are accessible is the proprietors merely did not prepare them while the themes began or they used stress based coaching and actual messed the canine up. So can constructive reinforcement artwork with those canine nicely to be trustworthy some canine are to badly ruined and no tactics will artwork. those are the canine that get euthanized repeatedly unhappy that no person will prepare the hyperlink between how they the place raised and knowledgeable. So your question is do i think of it fairly is crucial? I would immediately take them both on a long walk together. Dogs are more likely to get along if they have other distractions. If your dog still decides to be an *** then muzzle him.

One goes in the crate, the whole time, unless its outside pissing or shitting, its in the crate. I am not ruining my holidays with company because of a dog that wants to fight or whatever.
