Question:
Snoring/snorting dog?
?

Since we got Marley ( around a month or so) he has always always been a snoring dog- this really isn't the problem as both Scott and I also are good competitors in this evening activity. Recently though we have noticed he 'snorts' and 'grunts' when he is breathing or sniffing things. It almost sounds like a baby pig! I don't know how long this has been going on- we've only noticed it the past two weeks. It doesn't happen all the time, but at least 45-55% of the time.
Just wondered if anyone else has/had this problem-and is it something that requires surgery- do dogs have adenoids that can be removed to prevent snorting and snoring? It doesn't seem to be bothering him at the moment and its actually quite a cute noise- it adds to his character but obviously if this could cause problems later for him then I want to get it sorted asap.

Thanks!

A lot of dogs snort, especially the 'squishy faced' types. However, if the grunts are alarmingly different you may want to see the vet. I have shih tzu, and one of them started to grunt more than usual. It turned out he was actually having asthma attacks. Squishy faced dogs also have a harder time eating out of bowls and tend to stick their noses right in their food. So, if it seems like your dog is struggling a little more than usual you might want to see the vet to rule out allergies/asthma/sinus infection.

If it just seems like little Marley is an 80 year old man, I wouldn't sweat it.

What kind of dog is Marley? If he's one with a squished in face (like a pug or a bulldog) than it's absolutely normal for him to snore and grunt. Make sure you pay attention to his grunts and snores because if they begin to sound a little abnormal (contrary to his "typical" grunting and snoring), I would then take him to the vet as breathing problems are common in these breeds. If he's a normal-nosed dog, than I would probably take him to the vet, he definitely has something going on.

My grandmother has a dog that sounds just like a pig as well andd it doesnt bother him. He gets his check ups and everything and the vets havent seen anything wrong.. but if your worried about it you can always take your pup to the vet and find out for yourself :)
