Pure Black German Shepherds?

Question

After MUCH consideration I have decided I want a GSD. I have decided, also, that I'd like the dog to be all black, since the breed comes in that variation.

I have heard rumors that this is a rarer color. I don't really care about that, I just like the way it looks as compared to the regular black and tan. Will I have to pay more for one?

I live in the Pennsylvania area, I'm willing to travel. I've looked at petfinder.com and one there has interested me and I've E-mailed the foundation, but I am still browzing. Anyone know any GOOD, REPUTABLE breeders? I am -NOT- against taking a mix if it shares the phenotypical and mental/psychological stature of a GSD.

Any other information would also be appreciated. = )

Color

The German Shepherd Dog varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified.



So, please ignore the ones who tell you it is not a proper color.

The first person that answered you is completely false. I had a pure White GSD, the prettiest dog i have ever owned. He was the same price as all the other GSDs, but it really depends on the breeder..i had a regular black/tan gsd before him, and they were just alike as far as the breed is concerned. my white gsd was just as protective and smart as the black/tan one. I found my white gsd from my local newspaper. have u tried searching the newspapers in nearby cities? Breeders put ads in papers...



If that doesn't work out for you, I would suggest rescuing one. hey, you would get the breed you want plus you would be saving a life :) So if you want to rescue one, search for black GSD rescues, or just search : GSD Rescues..

Then go to a local dog show and ask questions. See if there is a local German Shepherd Club in your area. Go visit and again ask questions.



Learn as much as you can from different breeders. Reputable breeders will have a waiting list of people wanting a puppy. As they only breed to improve the breed not to make money selling puppies.

Solid black is not common, but not a 'rare' color. It is totally acceptable in GSD's, unlike solid white, which is a disqualifying color.



My suggestion to you is to contact breed rescue (link below). Ask if they have an available dog who will fit into your family situation.



If they don't, ask THEM for a reference for a reputable breeder. GSD's have numerous inherited problems that many breeders don't bother about. You want to get as healthy as possible of a dog, so you want to be sure you start with a breeder who cares about the breed and the pups they produce.



The people in Rescue are in it for the love of the breed and are in the know of who else is. They will be able to steer you to a good breeder.

They are fairly common and many pop up in the GSD Rescue near me. I owned a black GSD who was all German breeding and he was a great dog for 13 yrs. He won many titles and was the perfect housedog, got along with anyother dog I owned or fostered. I also rescued a blk and placed him and his sister also came into rescue.The bi colors are also very pretty, they are colored like a doberman, blk with red markings. Our rescue often has very well bred pups and dogs like this litter out of titled parents and the litter is up for adoption. Duncan is a black and red 4 1/2 month old male puppy out of German breeding with parents who are hip certified and titled. The breeder had some financial and health issues and could not provide the care that was needed for the puppies until they were sold. These puppies have all puppy vaccines, rabies, are micro chipped and spayed and neutered, current on heartworm and flea preventative. They are crate trained and raised in the home with a small breed terrier, a cat and several adult dogs and a horse. These are well breed dogs with multiple Siegers (dams sire is VA1), VA and V rated dogs in Europe. They are in theTampa, Florida area.

I had a black and she was a pure bred with papers and a good bloodline. They are rare as most are tan with the black saddle or sometimes white.Though the white can never be shown as they do not have the black face. there are many place you might check on-line as a start and good luck to you GSD are one of the best breeds to be found and they are very smart and loving and loyal.

Please don't listen to people that say blacks are not purebred! There are plenty of blacks in the show ring and they do their fair share of winning. Shepherds come in Black, White, Black and Red, Black and tan, Black and silver, Black sables, red sables, tan sables and silver sables. There are blue's and liver's out there as well (major faults) and the people that breed them, breed them for the money. Black is a recessive gene is this breed (both parents have to carry it in order to produce it). It is not that all uncommon actually. Black's should be nice structure wise. If you get a black that is not the best in structure, it show's off the faults of the dog more than what a black and tan would. A nice quality black can be beautiful!

There are 3 color variations for GSD's white, saddled and black. Black are usually culls and do not cost any more than the others, however for breed standards they are not accepted into shows.

They are rare and they usually will cost more. My friend got one a few years ago and spent $1000.00 on it. Typicallly they are between 500 and 700 where I am from. She put in requests with all the breeders in our state. She has been waiting for 3 years to get another one or a solid white(albino) one.

Black means the bloodline probably isn't pure.Cream and black is the way I went.
