People hate pitbulls because there are so many idiots that own them. Sure, they are an amazing breed. I have three of them. It's the people that abuse, mistreat, and fight these dogs that are to blame for their horrible reputation. Honestly, I love the breed but am always cautious if I happen to see a stay pit bull. They are also a lot more capable than most breeds and when they do attack a human or pet the result is a lot worse than if a dog like a lab attacked someone.

It's because the name "pitbull" has been misappropriated, and applied to all sorts of crazy, aggressive, inbred and crossbred animals used for dog fighting and as "tough guy" status symbols.

These crossbred animals (as opposed to pure bull breeds such as American Pit Bull Terrier, English Bull Terrier, English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier) are often genuinely dangerous, as they no longer have an innate inhibition towards biting humans.

You're more likely to get respect if you use the correct breed name for your dog, such as American Pit Bull Terrier (or APBT for short). Calling it just a "pitbull" will make people think your dog is one of the mutant mutt pitbulls described above.

Another factor is the sheer physical strength that all bull breeds have. Many people are wary of a dog that could kill you or bite your arm off, even if the dog is so well bred and well trained that it would never do this under normal circumstances.

you are right, any dog can kill a person. but, for some reason people find the pitbull more unpredictable. The pitbull can be the nicest animal ever, and for any unknown reason it can turn vicious and attack you. For example, my English had a pitbull that she brought into class and she showed us. She had the pitbull for over 3 years and it was the nicest thing ever One day the dog (for no reason at all) attacked her and her 2 year old son in the house. The dog was put to sleep, my teacher was alright, but the baby was left in ICU for 1 week and had tons of bites and cuts.

I dont mean to sound mean or anything.

I don't hate them but, I do know why others may.

One they aren't the normal cute dog for most.

two: In the past jerks have used them for dog fighting

three: People never trained them correctly leading to dog fights, dog bites and so on.

Four: People do not educate themselves enough about the breed. They can be wonderful dogs with the right people. But, I tend to see a lot of "Punks" get them because they look mean and big. Its a sad thing because the ones I know all are wonderful loving dogs.

There are nasty people who buy Pitbulls and abuse them, consequently if I see anyone with a Pitbull I am concerned.

I live in the UK and a lot of rough lads buy Pitbulls, they want their dogs to be aggressive and abuse them to make them aggressive.. Because of this the kind and considerate dog owners who have friendly dogs, get tarred with the same brush.

Pitbulls are banned in the UK, however I suspect that they are still available and are sold to the wrong people who do not make any effort to understand them. They are used as weapons. Because they are banned in several countries, this does not enhance their reputation, consequently they will always be maligned.

I adore German Shepherds and I have shared my house with several extremely friendly dogs. My dog was mauled when she was on her lead by a German Shepherd, she failed to defend herself and when I got stuck in, I too was injured. Now I am concerned about GSD's and I would run a mile if a Pitbull approached my dog or an out of control GSD.

I have read that caring breeders are now docking the tails of Pitbulls, apparently this discourages idiots from buying them to fight. I am told that fighting dogs are separated when their owners grab the by their tails and without tails they will not be bought as fighting dogs.

Im sorry but I find them a horrible breed of dog, They have killed small children before, I just don't understand why people would want a pitbull!

It specially annoys me when people in parks have got them off the lead, I have to keep my dog away. I've heard when pitbulls bite into somthing they lock there jaws and don't open!

No offense just giving my opinion.!

Most pitbull dogs are used for tracking, and some people (sadly) use pitbulls for weapons.. its sick and sad

My fiances grampa has a pitbull -Kim.. the most funniest and beautiful dog i know, shes brilliant.. and not an inch of hatred inside her!

My neighbours had 2 pitbulls as-well, frank and oscar they were a funny pair, noisy at night but brilliant and great personalities...

Dont worry about what other people think sometimes they just judge things because of other experiences.

Example- Teenagers.. im a teenager - Older generation seem to hate us because of some teenagers are horrible scruffy kids that cause riots .. well because of that, police, older people, etc dont like teenagers so when i go out in public it feels like im being judged...

i know exactly how you feel. i've rescued two pitbulls and they are the best dogs in the world. one we had to put down because it got some sort of cancer, but it was an mastiff, and the one we still have now is named dinah (we got her already named, i would have chosen something else) and she is an american pit bull terrier. i wouldnt get any other type of dog. i think that the people who hate them just watch the news too much and only hear about the mistreated ones that end up biting someone. i would too if i were treated like that. they are just ignorant. dont listen to them :)

They can be the most loving dogs, but any dog could turn! Pitbulls do have a bad rep for being fighting dogs though which mainly isn't their fault but the people who train them to fight, who then get fed up with them and they end up with RSPCA, or they get sold through papers, they seem ok for a bit cos they're in a new loving home but one day something annoys them and bad tings happen..... they are mainly bred as fighting dogs though.... you're so lucky to have found a loving one!!! people dont hate them they are just scared of them due to this.....

Dogs will behave in the manner that they have been brought up. You have obviously brought your dog up in a loving and caring way and not made her nervous or aggressive. I'm afraid that because of the bad press caused by irresponsible and some nasty people your breed of dog has got a bad name for no reason at all. I own a bearded collie and he is as daft as I am, that's the way I brought him up. A dog will behave in a gentle way if that is the way he was treated. I think you're a winner with your pit bull. She must be a good one. Remember that all breads have a bad reputation. Control and love her and you both will enjoy life together. Good luck and best wishes to you both :-)

I am a PROUD owner of a 4 year old female Am Staff named Precious Love. It totally pisses me off how people want to bad mouth just her breed. Some idiots on here say they were born to fight? Uhm, no morons, it's the same with any breed of animal, they are how you make them, thus it's called "training." I also noticed how one or more people who replied to this post mentioned how they would own a lab because they are great dogs and crap? Well hows this for a great dog, My neighbor has a black lab and it went wild and attacked my Pit! Bit her nose, and Precious tried getting away! She is not nasty like the lab. Some of the most mean tempered dogs have been smaller ones I have noticed. And just like two weeks ago this man had this husky mix that carried off his baby to the woods, no pit there. Precious as an example plays with our Pug, and our Puggle both who are younger than her, they romp her and carry on and she just loves on them. How can all breeds be justified by the act of stupid people who trained one dog to attack? It is just about raciest how people treat bully breeds.

Its the media. Ignore people who dont like them. They obviously dont care enough to do a little research. I know plenty of small dogs who are the most vicious things on earth but 10x the amount of pits who are wonderful. I would pick a pit over a "yorkie" anyday!

OH and DBoy...do you know the back story about why the pit attacked the family? I have known situations where the dog puts up with years of torment from little bratty kids pulling their tails and poking them and just gets fed up with it eventually. Its not always the dog's fault.
2009-07-31 10:06:51 UTC
Yeah. I have two pitbulls and they never hurt a fly. I don't get it why they are illegal in some places because they attack people. That's crazy. I got attacked by a chihuahua when I was 4 years old and they aren't illegal. People need to quit hating on pitbulls and hate on the people that make pitbulls mean.
2009-07-31 10:36:16 UTC
I also have a super-sweet pitt. Its sad that most are bred for fighting, and MADE to be aggressive fighting dogs. Because I have owned pitts that were NEVER aggressive, I don't believe that they are naturally that way. I believe that they were built to fight, but that their temperament is just as hyper and fun as a labs. They do have stronger jaws and a scissor bite...but that doesn't mean they are more aggressive than other dogs. I think its sad too.

Because there known to be trippy. To 1 day snap ,and maul there owner or someone.

I have been attacked by pitbulls. I knew the owners ,and they treated the dogs just like any other dogs. The dogs were just had there bolts loose. They had problems with other people they didn't know.

There very known to not be friendly with strangers ,and they have the highest attack rate. They are kinda like if you took a tiger ,and you turned it into a house pet. But not as extreme obviously

Ignorance and Bad owners.

But pitbulls were bred for fighting other animals. It is instinct for them to fight.

"pit bulls can easily be encouraged to be aggressive toward other dogs or, to put it another way, it takes less to arouse a pit bull than many other breeds to be aggressive toward other dogs."

My sister ran a rescue kennels for many years had had all sorts of dogs through her hands including a number of pit bulls. In all her years running the kennels she was only bitten once - by a Dachshund.
2009-07-31 10:10:24 UTC
Pitbulls are bred to fight. That's what the pit is all about. They are an extremely strong fighting dog and are virtually impervious to pain.

If you are attacked by a poodle or even a German shepherd, you can fight them off. If a pitbull attacks you, you're breakfast. You might have a docile one, but any dog can lose its rag and you have a killer on your hands. If you're lucky, yours will kill another dog. If you're not, it will kill a child - or possibly you.

bc pitbulls when raised to fight can be deadly. they are strong dogs and amazing fighters. sadly people who fight dogs, teach these dogs to be mean and vicious, rather than sweet and gentle as they are in their true nature. There have been countless attacks on humans, both adults, children and infants, therefore they have a bad reputation.

2009-07-31 10:06:23 UTC
the problem is pitbulls have been known to be vicious if you think bout it its like people you have the nice ones and the crazy killers but that doesnt mean you would see a pitbull and automatically assume there vicious cuz all dogs are different

My parents had one and let's get one thing straight -- They are bred for fighting. They are sweet to their own masters and friends but I have seen them tear-up another dog to the end.

You know, there are criminals of all types who are the nicest people that are doing time. Ever see the neighbors that are interviewed around a serial killer? "...He was the nicest guy..."

This kind of dog is just not a dog that you would want around your kids, they don't draw the line between playing and fighting and their natural killer instincts take over. Hey - Tigers and Bears are cute and cuddly but I don't want them for a pet.

because they were bred for dog fighting and were known to kill and attack. i think they are on of the most misunderstood breeds of all. Ps a pit is a place where illeagal dog fighting takes place even the name holds violence.

just because of their roots as fighting dogs. It's sad really because people buy into that stereotype and sadly alot of pits don't find homes or fall into the wrong ones (michael vick). I think it's all about how you raise a dog...if you beat even the cutest dog it could still be rotten.

Many people think that pit bulls are mean because people will sometimes train them to fight and, years ago, they were being bred for that. It's going to take a lot of time for people to get over the prejudices against pit bulls.

ok i absolutely love pit bulls but my dad hates them. many people raise pit bulls as guard dogs so they are aggressive and pit bulls' jaws lock when they bite down so unlike other dogs people cant get their jaws open to get the dog off them if they attack. but i totally know where you come from by saying that pit bulls should not be hated on because there are only those few who actually attack people and its the owners fault for raising it poorly. but the one thing that i know happens is pit bulls will attack a passer-bys because they are such loyal dogs and they will protect their owners and their home

Because that is the sterio type that has been burning into the minds of people. People make there dogs mean, and sick. The dog has done nothing wrong. All they want to do is be loved and to please there owner. Blame ignorance.

It is because pit bulls are guard dogs. And in order to get the guard dogs to be vicious, they abuse the dogs physically and mentally. I feel worse for the dogs then the victims in the attacks!

well i like them, but my cousin has one and she almost ate 2 cats..haha which they were her landlords. Now her landlord is angry and she doesn't want the dog in the house. But she will move because she doesn't want to get rid of her dog

irresponsible owners, have put such cures on pit bulls, and am afraid,we human are not all the same behaviour,so if you raise a child good.you be proud on day,and that goes for the doggies too

I know it all starts with one mean one then people think all are mean! Take rotweilers for example! A lot of people think that they are evil when most of them are the sweetest dogs ever!
2009-07-31 10:06:12 UTC
Some breeders breed aggression into the dogs. This has given them a bad rap. However, because you don't know what the ancestry is of the dogs, I don't trust them. I'll stick with a proven breed that is always sweet - golden retriever.

Pitbulls are fighting dogs. They are bred to fight, because stupid *** people thinks dog fighting it fun. But I too have a pitbull and she is very nice. Its all in how you raise them.
2009-07-31 10:05:44 UTC
people always need someone to blame. i remember when shepherds where the most agressive. then dobbies. then rotties. now pits. its sad really. I too love pits. i dont own any but i know MANY sweet ones
2009-07-31 10:05:56 UTC
I dont hate them, I think that they are sweet dogs. Would definitely own one if the chance arised.

Its just ignorance, dont take it seriously.

i guess because they have short tempers...but some pitbulls are sweet if they are trained correctly...

because its they're born to kill, your dog is only one of the few that isnt killer crazy!

The babies are always killed by pit bulls and you have to admit, when u walk past another pit bull they always seem to want to kill you =)

edit: you always see idiots like chavs own those aggressive dogs.

IM not saying everybody who owns them r bad
?
2009-07-31 10:05:18 UTC
i love dogs, but pitbulls are naturally more aggresive than other dogs, with that said it does not mean they are untrainable. they also have stronger jaws than other dogs so their bites are a lot worse than a regular dog.
2009-07-31 10:05:28 UTC
I don't hate them but ppl are terrified of them

because they have a STRONG history of viciousness and turning

when they are older.

Not all of them are that way but a lot of them have turned out that way.

I still think they are adorable though.
