This is how a dog learns by smelling. We say hello and give a hand shake to people and a dog is different. they smell each other because that is how they tell who is who.

Each dog smells different, even if the dogs look identical, the smell of each of them is different.

That is why a dog will smell another dog.

Again for us, we use eye contact and use names to identify our friends but animals cannot communicate like us so they smell each other to tell others apart.

It is just that simple and easy.

Dogs have anal glands and release a unique scent, especially when they get excited or scared. Dogs pick up on the scent and sniff, to make sure they will know what that dog smells like.

By sniffing the other dogs behind, the dog doing the sniffing can tell how old, if the dog is sick ,if it is in heat etc....... it tells them so much more information than most people tend to think! it's also a way of introducing their self to one another
