Question:
Why does my dog bark whenever a visitor enters my house?
2008-10-26 22:08:58 UTC
Whenever my friends or other visitors enter the house, my dog's first reaction is to start barking as soon as he sees them enter.

These people are not strangers. I know them for several years. I am not able to understand why my dog barks the instant he sees them enter and i also cannot make it out if his barking is out of anger or fun. How can i tell?

Also how can i correct this behavior? I want that my dog does not bark when someone enters house in my presence.

It's guarding what belongs to you and your family and the person or people who come in also enter the dogs place.

A lot of dogs do that. I have never had a dog that didn't bark when someone came to the house. They do it to let you know that someone's there... and they also do it to protect you and your household. They are strangers coming into their territory. Even if your dog has seen them before.. they still do it for some reason. Or, they do it because they are really excited and want attention.

Hi,

The most important work you can do with your dog is temperament training, or teaching your dog to be relaxed and comfortable around people and other animals. Since the most critical window for socializing your dog began to close when she was just 12 weeks old, you most likely have some catch up work to do.

If your dog hasn't been exposed to a wide variety of sights and sounds as a youngster she may already be wary, or ill at ease in unfamiliar situations. So proceed slowly: use extra caution, look for signs of stress, like panting, or stiffened muscles, and try to work within her comfort level as much as possible.

Well dogs usally bark because they are letting you know that someone has entered ther territory and stuff. I know a dog i use ot have use ot bark when friends came in because she was protecting me. Maybe thats why he keeps barking or he is protecting his territorie. Evan though he knows these people he still wants to be cautious about what is going on. If you want him to stop barking be like no! No barking and if he stops give him a treat he needs to know that its ok for friends to come in.

Every dog needs some type of training. The first class I ever took a dog to was https://tr.im/trainadog

It's a very basic kind of class. They will help you with your dog, and show you how to work with your dog at home.

They'll also answer any questions you have about your dog's particular problems and how to handle them. The most important thing in dog training is to be consistent and work with your dog at home on the lessons. The PetSmart class teaches sit, down, come, and the very basics every dog needs to know. They will also help socialize your dog. You are unhappy with an untrained dog, and believe it or not, the dog is actually unhappy to. You need to take your dog now, as the older he gets, the harder it will be to correct your dog's bad habits. Plus the classes are fun for you and your dog. My dog went from that first PetSmart class on to advanced obedience classes. You might also contact your local humane society. The one in my area offers obedience classes with a very good trainer at a reduced price.

he is barking b/c hes protecting your/his house. tell him no when he barks... if he stops barking then give him a treat and praise him a lot. he will learn. the people entering your house are probably going to have to work with you by coming in and out.

watch some of the dog training shows (its me or the dog and the dog whisper) these will help.

good luck

Just being territorial, trying to let the "intruder" know that the house is his (the dog's) space and not theirs. My dog does the same thing, even to people she's seen a hundred times. Just basic animal instinct to guard their family and house.

Put him in a separate room as punishment (a dark bathroom usually does the trick for my dog) if he barks again and leave him until he stops. If he starts again as soon as you let him out, put him back in, and keep doing it every time someone comes over until he gets the point.

Hope it helps. : )

Part of being a responsible dog owner, and in loving your pet, is training your dog. Behavior problems can be reduced or eliminated entirely when a pet owner takes the time to learn proper dog training techniques.

1. Get Advice From Professional Training Sites

Before you begin training your pet, do some research. One excellent way to gain the information you need is to review dog training sites online. There are a multitude of quality dog training sites that offer all the information you need to begin training your dog.

2. Set Realistic Goals

If you bought and brought your dog home two weeks ago, don't expect it to be trained within the month. Proper training means you're giving your pet enough time to adjust to his surroundings and to adjust to you. Once he or she feels comfortable, he or she is more open to dog training.

3. Be Patient

Once you begin training your pet, it's important to be patient. This ties into setting realistic goals. Your dog can be trained, but not all dogs are the same. Some pets learn faster than other pets. Be patient and realize that with persistence, the training will come.

4. Don't Forget About The Rewards

Whenever your dog makes progress, be sure to give a reward. One typical reward is a healthy treat that your dog loves, however an abundance of praise can accomplish the same effect for your dog.

5. Keep Track Of Your Pet's Progress

It's fun to see how far you've come with dog training. The easiest way to do that is to keep track of your pet's progress. Purchase a notebook and maintain a log of what you are training your dog to do. Record the dogs progress as well as whatever he or she has mastered.

6. Don't Forget A Proper Diet And Exercise

A dog is more amenable to training when he or she has been nourished. Don't forget to feed your dog a good diet to keep him or her sharp and alert. In addition, make sure your dog is getting the proper amount of exercise. Just like with humans, a healthy diet and exercise make for a healthy dog who is ready to be trained.

Don't forget to have fun. Dog training is serious, but don't overdo it. Reserve time to get down to business, but be sure there's plenty of time for love and playtime, as well.

it's probably because the fact that dogs are very territorial animals...he sees you as the leader and your house is your dogs domain...whenever someone thats not you enters your house your dog is letting you know to be careful and that he doesn't like the person that's there...or maybe he just wants attention...or the simpler anwser he does it because he can...

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes. The dog is only trying to protect you and if he/she quiets down after you tell it too.... it really isnt such a bad thing.

Maybe one day someone will come to the door you dont know and when you least expect it and doggy will be there to scare them and warn you.

Best of Luck!!

Dogs like to have a job to do, and he has decided that it's his job to let you know that people are there. You dog protects you, so warns you that anyone else is there. I would thank him and explain there is no need. Perhaps you can find other jobs fo rhim.
