Question:
Can a mail man do anything about a dog barking at him from inside a house?

I have a mail box that is literally on my house, its not on the street. So, the mail man has to come up to the house to deliver the mail. My great dane ALWAYS barks at him. I've tried everything to get him to stop, but nothing works.

Today, the dog barked at him as usual. After the mail man was done deliver, he took out his clipboard and looked at my house and wrote something down. Could I get in trouble for my dog barking at him? I mean, the dog is in the house. Its not like hes going to go through the window.

Your postal service person can only note that a dog lives on the premises but can take no action outside of that.

I have multiple dogs inside and all my mail was delivered with hand penciled notes stating the word "dog" on them. When I asked the postal person about this, I was told that one of the delivery people reported that I had noisy dogs and the sorting station would then place that note on my mail to alert the postal delivery people of that fact.

I don't know if they thought the dogs had opposable thumbs and could open the door or what. Odd.

Well let me tell you a little story, that happened to me.

I have a dog. When she was a puppy she didn't do this. But as she got older this protective thing took over and now she goes crazy when the mailman comes to the house. Anyway before knowing this was going to be an everyday thing with this dog and the mailman I didn't have the front door closed just the storm door was closed. The person delivering the mail that day did not deliver the mail and two days later I got a notice in the mail from the post office regarding my dog and that if something wasn't done about the dog. Yes, even though it was in my house behind a closed door. They had the right not to deliver the mail to my house.

Soooooo, until the mailman comes 6 days a week I make sure both the doors are closed. Since then I haven't had any problem.

And I hate to correct you but I'm going to. There have been many instances in this country that dogs have gone through storm doors (screens and windows).

Does your dog bark at everyone who comes to the door or just the mail man? Are you at home everyday, if so it will not be too hard to teach your dog not to bark at people who come to the door or only to bark once to let you know there is someone there and then to go lie down in another part of the house. We have German Shepherds and because they are naturally protective we teach them to mind their own business when someone comes to the door. We let them have one bark and then give the command "enuf!" and "go to bed". When we started training we had someone near their bed to praise them and give them a treat and to make sure they stayed there until released. Your postal worker may just have been making notes for a relief person so they would know that the dog barks but cannot get at them.

Some people will feed the dog when dinner is over and they think that's different, but the dog can't tell when it's dinner time and will bug you until you stop dinner and then feed him. So think about the chain of behavior that you're rewarding here. Learn here https://tr.im/tHhdO

Contrary to what you're being told here, feeding your dog "people food" is not what's making him beg. I'm a professional trainer and always feed my dog human quality training treats (cut up chicken, cheese, beef, turkey, etc.) and those of us trainers who do this never have a begging problem. Our dogs know that they get "paid" for correct behavior and never from the table. You could feed your dog dogfood from the table and have a begging problem. It isn't *what* you're feeding, but *when* and *where* you feed him that counts.

If you have a problem with begging, the odds are that you have other problems as well. Consider taking your dog to a basic training class to teach him to obey when you ask him to do something or stop doing something undesirable. Dogs that bark and pester you have learned bad habits-- from you! Going to a training class will help you unlearn those and help you get into better habits.

nope, as long as the dogs inside and doesnt go thru a window or attack or hurt him its fine. dogs bark. ours barks at the ups guys that come up to the door. he may just be writing down that theres a dog thats big that barks so they know if he has a sub to expect a big dog bark so it doesnt startle them or freak them out. but they cant do anything about the dog barking from inside

It probably;y depends on your state. But I would imagine he can't do anything, Maybe he is going on vacation and wants to warn the next mail=person. If your mail comes the same time each day as mine does I keep the dogs entertained so they don't know he is here.

He can't do anything for a dog barking at him. If you are responsible with your dog, and you seem like you are, and you restrain your dog from getting to the mail man, you're safe. ^^

If the postman feels the dogs is a threat to him, he can refuse to post your mail through the door.

Can your dog grab the mail from the letterbox?

You can't actually get in trouble though.

He might just be making a note for their records. I suppose they might note down houses with dogs that show aggression just in case they need to refer to it in future.

The dog has to actually attack to get you in trouble. Maybe he just wrote himself a note to be wary if your dog ever did get out? I wouldn't worry about it.

No it's your house and your property. Every time he comes around just kind of watch him (don't make yourself noticeable). If I were you I woul dput my mail box by the side walk.

No, they can't do anything about a dog barking- thousands and thousands of dogs do this each day to mailmen.

There is nothing the mailman can do to you...the only thing he can do is maybe grow a pair.
