Question:
Grandma's Dog Won't Eat Her Dog Food?

For about five years, my grandma had two dogs who were always together. Well in the summer of last year, her older dog grew very sick, and the vet told her to give the dog whatever she wanted, because she wouldn't last long. So my grandma began giving her food off the table. And she started doing the same with the younger dog, along with their own food. Well in the late Fall, the older dog was put down because she was in too much pain.

Since then, the younger dog will only eat food off the table. Her dog food sits in its dish untouched for days, until it finally has to be dumped out. What can my grandma do to get the dog to eat her own food again? She's even tried tricking the dog by putting stuff in her food to get her to eat, with no success.

Keep all other food away but her food in her bowl her. No snacks. no treats, nothing but her food. When she gets hungry enough she will eat...just don't give in to her. Our dogs have us trained pretty good and she is working Grandma to get the good food off the table...but we all know that is not good for her.

Human food is horrible for dogs not only is it very fatting it can also cause problems like pancreatitis. Meat, cheese and rice is okay. She should maybe start giving her rice with some boiled chicken or boiled hamburger. Or she could ask the vet for some ideas but no more table food. If she is healthy she will have to eventually eat.

You need to get her used to the bowl so if you take food from the table and let her see you put it in the bowl, she should get used to just getting her food straight from the bowl.

It really isn't a good idea to swap her food all the time. Dogs don't cope well with even little changes in their diet.

Poor thing, maybe put it on a plate and pretend it came from the table?

The little one needs some protein and vitamins!

I have been told to add a bit of cottage cheese and a teaspoon of olive oil to their canned food to help their coat. Maybe your gramma's dog would like the taste?
