Just adopted 2 yr old male rottweiler who coughs a lot , it is a very deep dry cough that sometimes makes him sick. I am not sure if his shots are up to date, yet, but would like to ease the symptoms until he sees the doc. Suggestions?

One of the simplest cough remedies that most of us have in the house is to put some honey on a piece of bread.

You can use a child's over the counter cough syrup, like Robitussin however, make sure the medicine does not contain acetaminophen, which can be very dangerous to dogs. Many vets recommend giving your dog 2 teaspoons of the coughing medicine if they weigh 40 pounds and over, 1 teaspoon for dogs that weigh 20 pounds are less, and ½ teaspoon to smaller dog. Contact your vet to find out exactly what type of human medicine and how much you can give your dog.

So the safest thing is to use the honey on the bread and ask the vet tomorrow about the child's syrups.

Good luck.

For a dry hacking cough such as kennel cough, you may be able to put him on dextromethophan cough syrup - (children's dose). Call your Vet and ask if this is an option for him. You should NOT use it if the dog has a wet, productive cough. In these cases, your dog needs to be able to cough out the "crud" from his thoat and lungs. But it sounds like he doesn't have a wet cough, so this may be option for him.

You do have to be careful about using human cough syrup in dogs, as there are numerous products that contain ingredients (such as caffeine) that are not acceptable for them. This is also why you need to touch base with your Vet.

Please DO NOT medicate him on this advice alone as I am not a Vet.

Be sure he has plenty of water and try to avoid very dry treats if at all possible.

Did you get him at the shelter? He has kennel cough. They are all sick there.
