Cycle last 3 wks.....1 wk coming in, 1 wk in which she will allow breeding, and 1 wk going out, and she will NOT allow breeding.

What about a friend of mine whose Shih Tzu had 6 beautiful puppies, she sold every one of them....fast...THEN she had the momma spayed...she died in the anesthetic.

Some of you even admit, puppies re sold and kept sometimes to 2 yrs, then dumped. HOW is that the fault of the seller??????????

About 21 days but if your mother doesn't know what she is doing the dog probably won't get pregnant. So if you don't want the dog bred, don't tell her. Raising puppies isn't easy, especially if something happens to the mother, which is not uncommon. It is also an expensive proposition. Should the mother need to have a c-section the vet bill could run to $1,000 depending on where you live. There is also the possibility of her developing pyometria and having to be spayed on an emergency basis, also very expensive. Then the puppies need to be given their first shots before they are sold or given away. By law in most states puppies must be at least 8 weeks old before they can be sold or given away. Also, rescues and shelters are full of dogs needing homes so it isn't that easy to even give them away. I've been involved with dogs in showing, training, and grooming for many years and I wouldn't dream of breeding a dog. It is too much work and is best left to professionals. I wouldn't risk the life of one of my dogs for anything when I can go adopt one from a rescue, shelter or real breeder.

Give her a detailed list of all the expenses required for whelping a litter of puppies. Its not cheap and its not easy. And you won't make a ton of money doing it.

You must take the mother (dam) in for regular checkups to make sure her litter is developing correctly and nothing is wrong.

You also need an ultrasound or an X ray at the right time in her pregnancy so you know how many pups to expect.

You need a whelping box for the dam.

You have to take the dam to the vet right after birth (that is, if it goes well)

if there are complications, you may need to see an emergency vet (expensive) and get the dam a C-section (also very expensive)

Then you have to have puppy food, dewormings, vaccinations, puppy pads, spaying or neutering.

and after all that, if the dogs have no pedigree of any kind, they are worth about $50.

Also ask to take your mother to a shelter. then ask the shelter workers to show your mother the euthanasia room, since most of those puppies will also be seeing it....and not leaving alive.

The chance of those puppies getting homes that will keep them past 2 years is slim to none...they will likely end up in a shelter before they turn 2 years old. They have only a few short days to find a home before they are put down, or they get sick and have to be put down.

for every thousand dogs that get dropped off in a shelter, seven walk out alive.

Show her these answers. There is no money in breeding dogs. or any animal.

And if she doesn't get the required vetting done and sells unvaccinated puppies. She could be sued and reported to the SPCA for selling sick puppies.

Once you've noticed the heat, usually when there is a discharge, it could continue on in that way for a week to three weeks depending on the female dog.

I agree that your mom should not do this, but have no idea how to educate her in just a paragraph or two.

You could say that all breeding dogs should be checked for genetic issues that they may pass on to their offspring - these tests are costly.

That there are too many unwanted poorly bred animals in the world already.

That unspeyed female dogs are more prone to ovarian cancers.

That unspeyed female dogs are a nuisance to the neighbourhood and cannot go to boarding kennels whilst in heat

That unspeyed dogs sometimes have up to 4 heats a year - unusual but it does happen

That the operation does not cost as much as most people think

That looking after puppies is expensive, messy and time consuming.

That for a successful mating, they will probably have to remain together overnight - it seldom happens successfully in the first mating - especially at work where they are stressed.

That it is morally wrong and irresponsible.

Ask her to take a trip to the animal shelter on kill day. Maybe she can volunteer to hold a perfectly healthy, lovely animal while the life goes out of it. We do not have a shortage of dogs in this country. We kill millions every year due to the ignorance of people like your mom. The actual bleeding can last 7 to 10 days. Heat cycle can be up to 20 days. Keep her indoors unless you can watch her and get her spayed as soon as her heat ends.

I support your belief of not breeding. There are enough puppies and dogs waiting in shelters looking for homes. Maybe your mother just wants to make money. I don't blame her, everyone does. But look at the morals of this situation. It is not right to make more puppies. For what? These pups might get homes, but that is practically ruining the chances of shelter puppies. Tell her that. Good luck!
