Question:
Pit Bull X Poodle? Good or bad?

First off I am mentioning my views on pet breeding: I am completely against 1. People not spaying their dogs and letting them have mutt puppies after mutt puppies, 2. People not researching and being knowledgeable before breeding any purebreds, 3. People breeding any "designer" dogs!

BUT I have to ask after seeing a doberman/poodle question.

Do you think pit bulls would be less mistreated and would be thought of more highly if we were to mix them with poodles (standard of course).

I am not encouraging this but the trend seems to be to mix everything with a poodle (goldendoodle, labradoodle, yorkie-poo-you know it is not a dog when it has a spell check squiggly under it!).

I guess would people be more open to allowing pit bull crosses into their home if they were crossed with the beloved ( and much overbred) poodles?

I know that when you mix breeds you have to be well aware of both breed traits but keep in mind that not everyone things of it that way.

If you could think of a cutesy name for a Pit Bull X Poodle mix do you think people would completely disregard the fact that it is indeed still half of the pitbull that they once hated.

(I know not everyone hates pits and this is not a debate of whether they are good or bad!)

I will take this a step further.... instead of breeding our existing ones to poodles, we should change all the signs on the kennels at the shelter that say 'Pit Bulls' to 'Pitoodles'...

No. If anything, it would damage both breeds even more.

If someone was to breed a "Pitterdoodle" or whatever, even slightly responsibly, you'd have 300 other people breeding an untested behavior mess of a Pit Bull with a poodle, that line would reproduce, and we'd have an even bigger mess that enforces the stereotype that Pits are bad dogs, and that starts a NEW stereotype that Standard Poodles are vicious as well.

We already have to worry about the Boxerbull (Boxer x Pit Bull cross), its only a matter of time before it stretches outwards to more breeds.

By the way, there are TONS of real breeds with squiggles beneath them. Like the Viszla.

Pit bulls are already frequently mixed with one of the most popular breeds in America - the Labrador retriever. There is even a cutesy name for them - Ador-a-bulls. I can't imagine what a bully-poo/pibblepoo/poobull (or whatever name you would call a pit bull x poodle mix) would look or act like. Honestly, the standard poodles I've met have been rather aloof with strangers, independent, and strongheaded, so I don't think that mixing them with the fierce-looking but exceptionally friendly, people-pleasing, velcro-dog pit bull would impart any favorable traits to the mixes.

To be specific, we are talking about full blooded American Pit Bull Terriers? Not just big dogs people call pits? Right?

I think mixing the pit breed with anything would ruin the breed.

Pits are good dogs and to the people who think otherwise, well, they are just ignorant.

I don't think mixing them would make any one more tolerant.

I don't like mixed breeds. I think all dogs should be pure bred to retain the characteristics of the breed.

I completely agree with your the points! You couldn't have hit that any deader on the head. I also hate the people breeding to make a profit. You breed because you love the breed.

(I've owned mutts and I know how loyal and wonderful they can be, I'm not saying they are bad dogs in any way)

I have homeowners insurance covering any dog attacks.....it certainly wasn't hard to get, either.

Did anyone know pits actually score better on temperament tests than poodles? {not the standard poodle, but the mixes, like minis} standard poodle is 85.3, pit is 84.3%, mini poodle is 76.6%

I rescued my (red-nosed) pit-poodle (standard) mix from the local pound. Her name is Kai and I call her a piddle ;-) Best dog in the world. She's the most loving, affectionate, loyal, intelligent, the best swimmer, great with people, ect ect... She doesn't get along with other animals at all, but only because she in protective and a little impatient with high-energy dogs. She is 8 and her only health problem is a little arthritis. I found two of her siblings: Rosco, the brother, and Pixie, the sister. They are all blond, but I know from researching that she has a chocolate brother named Choco. All have the red nose. Rosco does a lot better with other dogs than his sisters, so I really think it's about how you raise your dog.

Ok what IMMEDIATELY came into my head in terms of naming that type of "breed" would be a Pittie-poo...or....if you want to get comical....Poopi!!! lololol

I think no matter how you slice it everyone is going to hear the "Pitbull" part of the equation. I own a pitbull and I get all sorts of remarks and whereas I understand that a few years ago I was under the same misconceptions as they were...it still hurts my feelings. To say things like "Is she nice?" to my face and say "Oh my god you have a pitbull!" really hurts my feelings and already I start to get a bad opinion about them as people...I try not to but its hard.

No, i dont want my precious pitties being one of the designer breed mixes.

People should get an education on what great pets normal pitbulls can be, they dont need another designer breed.

Theres already too many pits in shelters needing a good home, let them find homes first.

we can help the breed by showing others how good they are, and by educating others. creating more mutts isnt the answer. the breed will benefit much more by creating steady lines, and educating the doubters, and the haters.

most insurance companies exclude pitbulls and any pitbull mix. Just owning one makes getting homeowners insurance nearly impossible.

Poodles (standard) are the best dogs ever. I don't think you should pollute them with a pit bull. Pit bulls are the worst dogs ever and even mixing them with a poodle wouldn't improve them.
