I think you need to take a wet cloth and wash wrinkles to prevent skin infections. I'll go look for some websites.

Okay basic info:

-They can be susceptible to some skin problems

-Height: 18-20 inches (46-51cm.)

Weight: 40-55 pounds (18-25kg.)

-They can be watch dogs, but aren't usually agressive

The Chinese Shar Pei was at one time called the "Chinese Fighting Dog". It is most likely that it originated from a cross between the Mastiff and the Chow Chow and various indigenous breeds. In actual practice, the Shar Pei served several purposes.. It was used in china as a "pit" fighting dog, for entertainment and sport and also as a hunting dog and a herding breed and a watchdog. The dog originated, it is believed, in the Han Dynasty and the many statues of that era which depict the fierce fighting dogs with the scowl on their faces are believed to be representations of the Shar Pei.

The exceedingly loose skin that is the hallmark of the breed was its biggest advantage when pitted against other dogs, there was so much skin that it was difficult for a dog or any animal for that matter to get a grip or do serious damage to any vital organs. Eventually their use as a pit fighting breed diminished, because they simply did not ever posses the mentality or attitude to be a fighter. Most Shar Peis appear, to this day, to be rather disinterested in other animals.

shar pei don't tend to be a friendly dog, they've got to be really well socialized to make a good pet, like most large, dominant dogs, an untrained, poorly socialized shar pei can do a lot of damage.

any spoiled dog can think it "owns" it's person, and be "protective" over that. all that takes is too much coddling and not enough training. a shar pei could also be professionally trained as a protection dog.

a well trained pet shar pei can be an effective "doorbell" with the best of them, they have a deep bark, and are trainable dogs, who can learn a release word (for when you want them to shut up and go lie down so you can answer the door)

a lot of show shar pei have more wrinkles than the breed really should, and that can lead to fungal infection between the folds of skin. keeping the shar pei skin clean and dry helps to avoid that.

You would need to take a wet cloth and wipe the wrinkles because they can get a skin infection. The average weight for a shar-pei dog is around 45-60 pounds. They were used at fighting dogs a long time ago because of their extra skin, and because of that, they are known to be aggressive and could be over-protective.

We presently percentage our domicile with a 13 year previous shar pei/chow mix. She has been very healthful & an extremely mushy dogs. She replaced right into a rescue at 6 months previous & i have had to study alot about the breed. the most important difficulty we've had is tender pores and skin to some shampoos. i have been using good performance Australian w/ tea tree oil for the outstanding 11 years & that has treated her pores and skin issues. i keep in mind that with some, you should ascertain their eyes are very well & keep a watch on their teeth. yet, my neighbor had one at the same time as he were given married & after the children got here, the dogs replaced into high quality. He began having problems with him at the same time as he lost his resourceful and prescient & listening to mutually. Then the dogs were given very fearful & snippy so as that they placed him down. At that element, any 16 year previous dogs ought to likely have similar issues so i do not imagine it replaced into the breed. I have yet another buddy with a shar pei & she's been satisfied, healthful & very mushy with adults, children & different pets. As we've study many circumstances, alot has to do with the tutorial. thus far each and each of those i have been round are a excitement & i'd definately have yet another one with out 2d concepts.

Skin problems...depends on the quality of the pup...but yes...they are more prone to skin, ear and eye problems than other breeds

How large....go read the breed standard...Im guessing 50-70lbs

mean or protective.....(bangs head)...its a DOG, it will be whatever you make it

They are NOT for everyone....it you have no understanding of what a DOG is....i wouldnt necessarily recommend. That dog will run circles around you

Any dog can be mean if the owner is crap.

Any dog can be an angel if the owner is responsible and good.

They are more likely to be sickly and get skin problems if they are from a carp breeder.

Look up breed standards.

Do your research.

However, generally: they are a very "independent" breed. They can have skin issues. They also often need eyelid surgery.
