White with some black, Male, Almost 4, 45-50 pounds, the personality of the breed.



In you own words how would you describe the average APBT's temperament?

Extremely human loving, but tends to be animal aggressive unless socialized at a young age. Can be some what difficult to train and bull headed, but very happy to please. They are very friendly social dogs.



Do you believe media hype? Do you believe that these dogs are breed to be child/killers, man-eaters, dog killers? Do you think they are good for families?

They are great for families when raised and bred right! No I don't like the media and of course they are not man eaters. True APBTs are very human loving and have been bred like that for years.



Have you ever had a bad encounter with an APBT? Have you had any APBT attacks in your area?

Only one. My friends dads APBT or so its was called (dog seemed around 90 pounds!) bit her friend. The dog use to be a guard dog for a drug house and was kept in a backyard for years with no human contact. It saw a deer and the girl come up to pet him and he bit her.



Do you think that they are cute, ugly, alright, or adorable?

Cute and very attractive to the eye. Powerful looking yet graceful.

I like both the same about. Both nice in there own ways.

I need to be a strong natural leader.

Yes - several of my neighbors and coworkers have them - all extremely nice dogs although from various degrees of "breeding".

The APBT owners I know are mostly responsible but Pits are not my type of breed - I like extremely independent northern breeds or terriers. But I've met many wonderful Pits.



Do you support BSL? No, Yes, Why? Are APBT banned in your area?

Absolutely NOT. No breed should be penalized for irresponsible owners - the owners should be penalized. APBT are not banned yet but we had a serious attack near here last year, so the county is considering it. I believe in DEED NOT BREED legislation.



If you have an APBT what color is your dog, male or female, age, weight? What do you enjoy most about owning an APBT?

None, but I love Rosy, a brown and white Pit that follows her master each day as he jogs. Rosy is getting older now and often will stop in the shade of my Walnut tree and drink from the water I keep out for the feral cats then lay down for a rest - Rosy never chases the feral cats, the neighbor's lose chickens or bothers my dogs, she just waits patiently for her owner to jog back by on his way home. Nice, nice dog.

The ones that have been raised by responsible owners have been very friendly dogs.

ANY BREED can be aggressive and dangerous if owned irresponsibly. I have Akitas, if socialized and trained they are no problem - if left on their own to wonder where ever, they will get in trouble .... like almost every breed.

Yes - a loose Pit used to stalk and threaten me as I tried to get in my car in the morning. It belonged to a suspected drug dealer a couple properties over and was allowed to roam at will. It WAS scary - very aggressive - but I suspect the owner WANTED that and encouraged it. Not a responsible owner and not the dog's fault.



Do you think that they are cute, ugly, alright, or adorable?

Pits can be beautiful dogs.



How do you prefer APBT's, ears, cropped or not? why?

I am totally against ear-cropping - I've seen too many pups suffering through this procedure for show.

Yes, the upright ears look sharp and alert, but it is not worth the pain to the dog.



What important trait do you think a person should possess in order to own an APBT and care for it correctly?

Realize you have a powerful breed with a bad reputation and use extra caution to socialize your pup well and train the dog and keep the dog contained - responsible ownership. Same as I do with my Akitas.

Yes, I like all dogs.

No, but I am not a Terrier type person. I know a few and they all seem to be decent people.

No, I feel each dog/owner should be judged individually. I live in an apartment complex and APBT are excluded in the lease, as are many other breeds, including GSD. That said I kept my GSD here for close to 3 years until he passed. Management here is open minded enough to judge each dog/owner on their own merits. Hence there are also APBT here. There is no ban in my city/county.

I do not own one, if I did I would lean towards a brindle.

From my personal experience they seem to be bright and cheer full dogs.

No. As with any dog if properly trained and socialized they would be fine.

We love American Pit Bull Terriers, they are beautiful. Every year 16,000 dogs are killed from illegal dog fighting, mainly used with pit bulls. They have a terrible stereotype, that they are vicious, mean, aggressive, but they are TRAINED TO FIGHT. People don't remember this.



We don't see many pit bulls around here, but we don't live in apartments. The average temperament would be like any other dog, normal. Not hyperactive, but normal.



No, these dogs are NOT man eaters/child killers.They are great for families.



Never had one bad experience with these dogs, they are VERY cute sweet and adorable. Think they are fine ears cropped, but prefer their natural look. To own a pit bull, people need to know that they are known for aggressiveness. Yes, they are strongly built, and many rescues have thick coated ones that had a dog fighting past, but they are great dogs.



I hate hearing "Are Pit Bulls bad dogs?" because people need to know ANY dog can be a bad dog. It's racism. Do people say "Are White men bad people?"? Not what I've heard.



BYB bred pit bulls need to end. They are delicate breed and we are trying to end the bad reps. BYBers are making it worse, the laid back attention, the unproffessional work, it helps in no way.

Do you own one? Would you ever want to own one? And have you met many APBT owners? What do you think of them? I do not currently own one. I have fostered several. I probably would never own one as I am not overly fond of terriers, I am more of a mastiff kinda of gal. I have met several APBT owners some were better than others. I have never had a problem with most APBT I have known or their owners.



Do you support BSL? No, Yes, Why? Are APBT banned in your area? No I do not support BSL. In the town I live outside of they are not banned but several of the surrounding communities have banned this breed and mixes.



If you have an APBT what color is your dog, male or female, age, weight? What do you enjoy most about owning an APBT? I have had a black with white markings and a brindle. Those were the 2 purebred APBT I have fostered for the longest time.



In you own words how would you describe the average APBT's temperament? Seriously, I hope the APBT lovers out there won't hate me for this one but the first word that comes to mind is spasy. They are goofballs and everyone I have known wanted to be a lap dog. They are devoted, happy dogs that will slobber on your face any chance they can get and whack you with a whiplike tail wagging 100mph. I have also found this breed to be easily fixated upon things. Vacuums is one instance. Also an APBT comes into the bar I work at and if ppl are playing darts he has to be removed or he will leap mid air to catch that dart, if it gets to the board before him it is not staying long :)

I think with the proper dog experienced educated owners this breed is great for an active family. I do not judge this breed at all based upon media hype. I have only met one that was human aggressive, and I must add this dog was POORLY socialized. He was safe with his family, that is it. I have met several that were dog aggressive.

Do you think that they are cute, ugly, alright, or adorable? Personally not really. Yes, there was a pit bull attack about 45miles from my home. Long story short...the dog had poor owners who did not train/restrain the dog and allowed it loose. Dog fight happened and someone stepped in and unfortunately got bit. I think they are handsome dogs.

Someone who has a strong assertive personality and who can dedicate time to training, socialization and exercise. Someone who has experience in handling large breed dogs.

They are very dedicated to their people and will do anything to please them which is exactly the trait that dogfighters love to exploit. That same trait is why I believe they could be as versatile as a GSD as far as SAR, bomb sniffing, therapy dog, service dog, cadaver dog etc. if they could just shake the bad stigma they have.

We had to throw an open can of dog food over the kennel wall in order to feed him. However, I've been around several Pits and that is the only bad encounter I have had with them.

How do you prefer APBT's, ears, cropped or not? why? I enjoy a properly done crop. I think cropping animates the ear movement more. If I got an uncropped dog, I would not choose to crop it, however.



What important trait do you think a person should possess in order to own an APBT and care for it correctly? Acknowledgment of the breeds history and genetics. Many owners may have good intentions but completely ignoring, for example, the fact that dog aggression is common and thinking their dog is not capable of being aggressive towards other dogs EVER is just plain stupid. If a fight breaks out at a dog park, even though a Pit didn't start it they will surely finish it and will be just another 'Pit Bull attack' headline regardless of what the real story was. Don't set the breed up to fail.

-- I have a mutt who may have some bully-breed ancestry. I would probably be hesitant to go out & get one, given my current situation, unless I adopted an adult with a pretty low level of animal aggression. I can handle being "careful" with a dog but I don't know if I'd want to do the "crate and seperate" for the next 10-15 yrs. Have met TONS of APBT owners. Unfortunately, most of them were idiots- I lived in one of 'those' areas for a while. I have met a lot of good owners though. Easy to spot good owners; they usually have well-behaved dogs who aren't wearing logging chains.



Do you support BSL? No, Yes, Why? Are APBT banned in your area?

-- No, and no. Though they are banned in Sioux City Iowa, which isn't far from here; ban went into effect a couple years ago....SD rescue groups have seen an influx of surrendered APBT's from Sioux City.

-- Again, she's a shelter mutt- no idea if she's got APBT or Boxer or ACD or what- a lot of people who meet her think she's definitely a "Pit mix". She's a rich red color with white chest & toes, female, about 50 lbs, 1.5 yrs old. She has the joyful, people-friendly exuberance I've seen in a lot of APBT's. She has incredible prey/hunt drive and once she's focused on something, she'll go until she drops (or until I make her stop). Those traits are my favorite :).



In you own words how would you describe the average APBT's temperament?

- CORRECT temperament is people-friendly, exuberant, loyal, tenacious & intelligent. "Average" temperament usually falls somewhere short of the ideal, unfortunately.

- No, I don't believe media hype. The media over-simplifies & generalizes waaaay too much. Those stereotypical statements are swallowed & repeated by people who have NO CLUE about dog behavior whatsoever. A proper APBT makes an excellent family dog- for the right owner.

- I've encountered a few who weren't friendly, but I've never been physically threatened or endangered by one. No attacks that I know of. Last dog problem I heard of was about 2 yrs ago, where a pack of strays that included 2 Border Collies and a Lab were killing livestock.

- I think they're incredible looking dogs; especially the lean, athletic gamebred body type.

- I like them natural. Same with Boxers. I think it softens their appearance & presents a more "public-friendly" image for those who'd pass judgement based on the dog's looks alone.

- Intelligence. LOL. That, and confidence. Confidence in handling/training the dog plus confidence in dealing with a public that'll judge, demonize & ostracize you.

From ones that are bred properly i would think they would have lovely temperaments but i have not met with a good temperament nor a bad one, as i said, they are banned here so i have not met one, properly.

Nope. I feel that if the APBT has been bred well and has the right owner then being put into a home with families shouldn't be a problem.

We have had attacks in Scotland - not in my area but in the country we have. By APBTs, yes, which is why they are banned but recently, no. The attacks most recently have been of mutts that look like bully breeds, however, the media still feel the need to put a picture of the APBT when an attack is reported even though they are banned!

I think responsibly bred ones are beautiful!

I'm not really to bothered. Un-cropped ears would indicate that they aren't going to be fighting (although i don't suppose a lot of THOSE people care whether their dogs ears are cropped or not when fighting?) Although, i do think they look lovely with them cropped.



What important trait do you think a person should possess in order to own an APBT and care for it correctly?

In my opinion they just need to be educated. I don't know a lot about the APBT breed but i know that Staffies (different breed but similar) are strong dogs, lovely but strong, and so need an owner that can handle that. They need an owner that will train to be the lovely dogs they really are.

I would dislike to own one, I am not going to lie. They aren't the breed I'm interested in, I am more into the herding breeds at least for the time being. That being said, I think they are great dogs for the people that are willing to put time into their dog. I don't get why people discriminate against these breeds so much. Being a Border Collie owner, I know what nippy, territorial aggression is. I don't think a lot of people realize how aggressive Border Collies can be. They are more often than not sent to shelters because they've nipped or lashed out at someone's child. They just aren't suitable with small kids. Period. But has BSL ever (recently) banned Border Collies? Don't think so. And I hope they never do, but it isn't fair that pit bulls and breeds like them are being judged by their history and capability. I don't think anyone can deny these dogs are more capable to actually kill someone than most other dog breeds, killing is what they were bred to do. Every human being in the world is capable of murder, cheating, stealing. Doesn't mean that they would all ever do it. You can't judge an entirety of a breed based on it's negative half. And you can't base it on it's positive half. I think the people telling random people on the internet who are asking things like "what's a sweet dog that's super easy to train" to get a pit bull because they are the greatest dogs in the world are just as much of a problem. And sure, you hear about pit bull attacks a lot more than you do any other breed. But these breeds are very popular, and attract bad owners. So, if you took a percentile, I think they would have just as high a bite record as every other breed of dog. As far as why some people hate them. Although it's wrong, the people who have known someone who has been attacked by one, or the ones that have been attacked themselves, have every right to fear them. Just like I have every right to fear Jack Russell Terriers because one nearly killed my dog. It's an ignorant, blind fear. But I think that is a case where probably anyone in their shoes would feel the same. ADD: yeah, casey's posts interest me. She always complains about how her dog was attacked by a pit bull. Well my dog was attacked by a jack russell, what say you to that? Let's go euthanize all of the jack russells in the world because they are all clearly vicious animals because one attacked my dog! ANZIE: Really? I've only heard of them being banned in Ireland a really long time ago. Guess I never knew about the Italy one...

5. They seem sweet, but I don't completely trust them. My mom's dog bit my niece for what seemed no apparent reason. She had never bit anybody, my niece was about 3 yr. old she went up to pet her and she nipped her. It was not vicious, just a snarl and a snap. I still wonder what went wrong.

6. Not all, but they (and GSD's) definately have the ability if they're not socialized. The thing in my is that most of them are not. 4 out of 5 of them are tied up in the front or back yard.

7. I got bit once. Completely my fault. The dog was tied up and I was play fighting with the owner (a girl), I got too close and got nipped in back (not the butt).

8. They command the same type of beauty to me as a lion or tiger. Beautiful from a distance and I don't feel confident that I could own one. I was given one as a gift, and passed it right on to a relative of mine who had more experience with them.

9. Cropped ears look more elegant. It has to be done properly though. I've seen as many bad croppings as I've seen bad boob jobs.

--I love APBT - the breed shouldn't be based on the mistakes of individual dogs carelessly handled by their owners.



--Nope I do not own one, but would love to. I had an APBT mixed ***** and she was the sweetest thing ever, never too a bite or lunged at anyone. I haven't met many, but the few I've seen seem to be youngsters in ages ranging 16-20. Makes me curious to think why they would choose such a specific breed, hopefully all for the right reasons - a companion!



--No! I certainly do not support the BSL - it's basically basing a negative attitude on the APBT breed because of the idiotic mistakes of the owners who carelessly take notice or handle their dogs correctly. --My dog who was crossed with one was black and white, female, she died at the age of 16, and was around 7-9 stone... blame the parents for feeding her! :L I enjoyed the fact of knowing, that just because she had what people make out to be a ''vicious breed'' in her, that she over came what people accused her of being to turn out a sweet natured dog, who loved anyone and everywhere that she saw! Regardless of her mother being bred as a fighting dog.



--I would describe the average temperament as ''hot'' - they're easily distracted by things, and can turn quite easily. However the majority are sweet natured and warm hearted animals!

As recently as last month as I went to give a homeless couple some money and a bag of dog food for their pit bull. The dog went to attack me after I had been talking to the owners for ten minutes. That is what I get for breaking my own rules.



Had a Pit Bull go after my dog at PetSmart. It was a dog there for adoption that they KNEW was dog aggressive. Got my local PetSmart to ban Pit Bulls in store for adoption day.
