I have an australian shepherd/ queensland mix. She's from a very good blood line, is 13 years old and I have to shave her to keep her cool in the south Texas climate. This is an option for you. She feels so good afterward and we have to do this every 2 months. She does shed something terrible though, so unless you are willing to keep up with the grooming schedule, keep looking. BTW, our little Gabby is a very active dog, and you'll have to play fetch for like an hour each day, they love it and it comes naturally to them. These dogs are so smart, I never really trained her but she knows hand commands and whistles and verbal communication perfectly. She was the runt of the litter and I fell in love with her! I just took her to a new groomer 2 months ago and they couldn't believe she was 13, they thought she was 6 months old at the most (that's how small she is). She just keeps going and going and going.... Shoulda named her Duracell. ;)

Dogs are mammals and all mammals shed. Some dogs shed less than others or at least 'differently'. Soft coats like Poodle, Bichon, Maltese will not seem to shed much but part of the reason is due to the fact their shedding hair will tangle into attached hair unless you brush them often. If you really want a nearly non-shedding dog, get a Chinese Crested, the nearly naked one.

Oh, and if you check the AKC site on breeds, you will find there isn't a recognized breed called a Mini Australian Shepherd.

All dogs shed to some degree, and yes, an Aussie sheds buckets. There's really no such breed as a Mini Aussie, though ... and if you buy one advertised as such, it's likely a puppymill dog (you DON'T want one of those) ... a purebred Australian Shepard from a good breeder will be a wonderful dog, but it needs a LOT of exercise!

If you do get another dog, feeding a good food and brushing every few days (outside, preferably!) , might minimize the amount of hair you find in the house, but won't eliminate it entirely. Don't know when your birthday is, but "happy birthday" ... and please do some research on the dog breeds before you decide which one is best for you! Good Luck!

ok first of all there is no such thing as a mini australian shepherd. it is just a "breed" of dog that people made up so they could start selling their aussies for a lot more. and second of all of course an aussie sheds. what do u expect it is just like a border collie and both r huge shedders. if ur looking for a small dog that doesnt shed look for a bichon or a poodle. but dont give in to the designer dog craze. it is just a way for back yard breeders and puppy mills to steal ur money and give u a dog that wont last very long because it is unhealthy

With proper daily grooming, and a good quality food, the shedding is minimal on most breeds. If you don't brush them, and/or feel low quality food, they'll shed more.

"There is no such thing as a "totally" non-shedding dog. All dogs shed at least a little hair at one time or another, as do humans. There are however dogs that shed little to no hair. This is a list of breeds that shed little to no hair."

Here is a list of those breeds:

Miniature Australian Shepherds are very, very heavy shedders. Most long coated breeds or hearding dogs are. Try Soft-coated wheaten terriers, scottish terriers, west-highland white terriers, schnauzers, poodles, bichon frise, or those breeds mixed with a 'shedding' breed. For example: Labradoodles, which are standard poodle/lab crosses either don't shed or hardly shed at all.

Yes Shepards shed. Some dogs that dont shed much are poodles, Maltese, Bishon, and retriever dogs. Thats all I can think of in the moment.
