We live in Florida and we would like a small house dog that would be able to travel with us. There are 2 kids in the house, a 12 year old girl and a 19 year old boy.
We want a dog small lap dog that would be good with kids, easy to train/smart, loyal, a dog that would bark if there are intruders, and be able to travel. Some dogs can't travel because something in their noses or lungs don't let them, so when they are flying on a plane they could die. We don't want a dog that could die from being on a plane.

All small dogs barks. A lot of them aren't naturally great with kids so it's up to your training. Bichon and Havanese are the smartest, most gentle and loyal. Whatever you do, don't get a chihuahua, dachshund, rat terrier or min pin. Too feisty. Polly Pocket is strange, those have the highest bite rates of any dog.

Any given small dog would suit your needs; each dog is an individual and so it depends on the training and temperament of the specific dog. Given that you don't need anything *too* particular, your family would do well by going to a local shelter or rescue. You all can meet with the staff there, tell them what you're looking for in a dog, and they can match you up with the best candidates to fit your lifestyle.

If you get a dog JUST for the lap-dog factor, you'll easily be disappointed. You should get a dog to be a DOG and if you go into it expecting something particular (such as an extremely cuddly dog), you're setting yourselves up for disappointment. This is how many dogs get surrendered to shelters--because a family wanted a dog that was snuggly, non-energetic, already trained, etc. and that is NEVER guaranteed. Get a dog to have as a fun companion, and re-think this whole dog thing if you can't get the "lap-dog" thing off of your minds.

Since you mentioned trainability, you can't get any more intelligent than a poodle. You could get a mini or toy, as long as you're willing to deal with the extensive grooming requirements. Your kids will have a lot of fun running around, exercising it, too (since poodles of all sizes are athletic by nature).

A word of caution, you might want to steer clear of terriers. They can be really high-energy, and I'm not entirely certain that'd be the best for you guys (and would result in a very bored dog on flights).

Yep a Jack Russel they are reliable little dogs with the middle of a large dogs. Or a Miniature Bull Terrier they arrive in truly a small length now a days. The Jacks are quite smart extreme power dogs with the middle of a loin & mind of monkey I swear, lol. The min Bullies are much like a common Bull Terrier opinionated & obdurate yet dependable as.

My family has a Yorkshire Terrier that does all of those things. Although just to let you know, most small dogs bark even where there AREN'T intruders. We have a lot of cats in the neighborhood and any time she heard one outside the window, no matter what time of day or night it was, she would start barking and would not shut up. But I think a Yorkie would be a nice addition to your family.

All small dog are great for traveling if properly trained. They must be house trained and car trained, so that there is no accidents in car or hotels or some one Else's home. A dog under 10 pounds would be great for airplane travel because you can get a soft carrier and carry her on board with you.

My husband drove big rig truck for many years and he had a toy poodle that wnt in the truck with him and it was great for him.

Jack Russell Terrier.

And before the TD's commence hear me out people!

-They are good loyal guard dogs

-Only poorly trained JRT's live up to the "yappy ankle-biting" stereotype.

-They can be lap-dogs

-They can be great with children, again with proper training

-They are smart

-They are hardy little critters.

BUT I must say you have to be dedicated. JRT's are awesome dogs, but if you let them get away with too much then they will quickly take advantage of you, so you need to be a good trainer.
