You would be much better off finding a private trainer. They do either private lessons or in classes. They are much better trained than the ones at PetsMart. Your vet will probably have a list of good trainers.

Remember your pup has to have all of it's puppy shots including Rabies before it's safe to start any class.

Petsmart training classes are generally a waste of time and money in my opinion. For one thing there are too many distractions inside a store. For another, the trainers are generally inexperienced.

A nine week old puppy doesn't even have all it's shots yet. also, it's a baby. It would be comparable to putting a one year old into a kindergarten class. Use the next few weeks to a month working on house training and bonding with your pup. Teach it to walk on lead, crate train, and use fun games such as doggy versions of follow the leader, hide and seek and find it (objects) to build a fun, positive foundation for later, mor formal training.

When your pup's about 12-16 weeks of age, look for a puppy class run by an obedience club or even your local shelter.

A puppy training class is basically a socialization class that exposes the puppy to different people and dogs. They also often start teaching some basic commands using games and treats. Puppy classes should be pretty much all positive training with only minor corrections for things such as biting.

Yes, puppy kindergarten class is a great way to start. They will teach you how to teach your dog some basic commands, but also discuss with you how to care for your new puppy. You will learn only positive teaching techniques where you mark and treat good behaviors and ignore those behaviors you do not want.

You will also learn about some basic grooming like clipping nails, and discuss crate training as well as house training.

There is usually a follow on class called family dog. This is an extension of the puppy class.

They are both well worth the time, money and effort for a lifetime with a well behaved pet and an informed owner.

You can take these classes through local dog training facilites, as well as many stores like Petco.

You will be glad you did!

I would not take a 9 week old out yet In a public place You need to finish up your puppy vaccinations first . If you just want to have fun with your dog then go to petsmart . If you want a better training I would go to a obedience club or something like that .

I did a 9 week puppy class with our Boxer... she di very well in it. But you also have to remember that taking the dog to the class does not make him perfect you must work with him at home in your spare time! I liked the class because i learned how to train my dog. This also begins teaching your dog animal socialization... your dog will learn and meet other dogs...very important if you plan to take him to parks or other public places! They also get used to new places and people!

Training classes only work on humans. They teach you how to teach your dog. You will have to put in the effort no matter where you go or when you go. Going to a younger class with your dog does help you get a heads up on socializing your puppy so it is a good idea to attend group classes.
