Today's Miniature Schnauzer is a medium-sized, robust and active dog of terrier type, resembling his larger relative, the Standard Schnauzer, in general appearance. He has an alert and lively disposition, is square in outline and sturdily built and comes in three colors: black, black and silver, and the most commonly seen salt and pepper. Groomed with distinctive eyebrows and beard, he makes an attractive, trappy companion for adults and children alike.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a terrier breed originating in Germany, and being recognized as early as the mid 1800's. The name "Schnauze" means "Snout" and the dog was so named because of the beard on the muzzle.

Originally several breeds are thought to have played a part in the development of the Miniature Schnauzer as it is now known. The Spitz, and/or the Pomeranian of that day, the Miniature Pincher, the Affenpinscher, the Scottie, and the Wire Fox Terrier figure in the history of the breed. A blending of the various coat textures, colors, and temperaments have helped to develop the lively, ingratiating, and smart companion we now know.

Perhaps the best place to learn about this breed would be on the Club web page listed as the second link below.
